So, I'm looking for an 8" screen with vga input...

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

I'm sure many of you have seen the new lenovo laptop.
Long Link

I think that'd be cool to try out. I mean, I have an old laptop I can screw around with, and I'm not about to drop $4000 for a 17" laptop with even more mass on it.

So I'm looking for a good screen that is 7.5 inches tall/wide, and is a maximum of 6.5 inches long/tall, so it can fit behind my laptop's existing screen, guts and all. (I plan to use a program to rotate the display)

A 8" Diagonal 4:3 screen fits the bill the best at 7 5/16 x 6 inches. If it exists.

Now, what I want from you guys is places that can find me a 9", 4:3 lcd screen with vga in and a high resolution (1024x800 or 800 x 640 are preferred) that costs $150 or less, and is relatively thin when the guts are placed beside the LCD.

AEIComp was the first place that came to mind, and they sell good screens, but they are a little pricey for a practice project. Who knows, maybe I make one, people like it, and I get paid to buy laptops and make some more with AEIComp screens.

Some screens that would work:

Any other suggestions?

If they had controller boards. They seem lacking on first glance.

So I'll probably go with the AEI Comp one, not because I want to, but because it seems like there's no alternative.

Next problem: A way to slide (or by other means) the screen out from the back of the other screen. I'm thinking using a slider rail is my best bet. Attached to the top and bottom of the sliding screen, it would add zero thickness to the overall project. And thickness is a big priority. I want to total project to be 1/2" thick, maximum. The screen is 5/8" thick, but I hope to fold the guts beside the screen, effectively halving its thickness. The LCD itself is 1/4" thick, if just about every other LCD has anything to say about it.

I'm thinking this: http://www.cabinetparts.com/shop_2008/i ... r=Accuride

But I'm wondering if it comes in a 1/4" model. It probably doesn't. Is there an easy way to create a professional-feeling, reliable sliding device?

Ideas! Input!

Why not pick up one of these? Sure, they are a tad small, but they run off 5V USB.

Because it's the same price as the 8" model, perhaps? Cool, but not for my purposes. I think first I'll build a sliding rail and case with a mock up lcd.

Solution: Nylon rods attached to the top of the screen that slide into cylinders.

There are quite a few 8" screens that are 800x600 with Vga.
They have touchscreens which can be easily removed if you don't need them.

I'm worried about the thickness of them more than anything. With AEI I have a guaranteed 5/8" thickness. With anything else...not so much. Not to mention it comes with LED backlighting at stock brightness.

The second link's links go to a site my computer reports as a "reported attack site", and the third monitor is "super slim" at only 4 cm

1/4" on the thickness of a laptop is quite a bit. That's 25% thicker these days.

Thanks for trying, but for something as picky as this, I think I'll go with the sure thing.

Okay so today I made a mock-up of that AEI Comp screen. It appears I'm actually looking for a 9" LCD. 10" is a little big, but 9" will match the height of my screen minus the taskbar. And a 9" 4:3 LCD is a little hard to come by...

Help me look!

Okay. Here are my options (I'm pretty sure they're all non-existent, any proof of these would be rewarded with part of Gamelver's soul).

The goal is to match a height of just under 7.5" when rotated 90 degrees.

First pick: 9.4" 4:3 (7.5" wide)
Second pick: 9" 4:3 (7.2"), or 8.4" 16:9 (7.3")
Third pick: 8" widescreen (7")
Last pick: 8" 4:3 (6.4"), 8.4" 4:3 (6.7")

Please help me out, I'm having trouble finding anything suitable.
