yeah i can do it now, not very well, but enuff not to damage anything that bad again, my dad showed me, didnt get any pics tho, would bore u guys, and i had no batteries for my camera (i know lazy bugger wouldnt go to the shops for more)

My dremel files and extra bits came, so i took some photos for u guys.





And loving the new forum, its sweet.

Well the proper start to my project will be soon guys, i bet ur all thinking my god all u have done is rip open a ps1 and a screen, ur not gonna do this.

Well i have been practicing some soldering, didnt take pics, been going to my dads to practice, and u guys all thow what soldering looks like.

Also BIG NEW !!!!!!
Tomorrow should be the day to buy my bacteria case kit. Then when it arrives the fun can really begin.

So bare with guys, should have something interesting for u soon next week.

Not just random tools i have bought.

You do realize that the dremel you bought is going to be a gutless piece of crap. I have one of those that came in another kit, it is the biggest waste of energy ever. Also, why would you solder smt for your first experience? That's ludicrous!

SMT, I believe, stands for "surface mount *something*." (Can't remember what the "T" stands for at the moment.)

Basically, they're components soldered to the surface of the circuit board, as opposed to through-hole components with legs that go through holes in the board. They're difficult to work with, especially for someone new to soldering, hence this:

I got one of those cheap drills at a car boot sale for £7, it is quite useless, I just use mine to take off traces off contacts!

You should really get a quality drill, eg a Dremel - costs a bit but worth it.

Stephen, i like you, your patient and teachable. listen to all the older modders on this site (especially bacteria) and you'll be a great modder/portablizer, by the way, go on amazon.com and check out the Black and Decker RTX rotary tool. it is Just like the Dremel in quality and accessories. i have one and it is great, sturdy, and nicley priced! it accepts dremel accessories too, so you can get those as well. And the RTX allows you to change your RPM (rotations per minute), really, check it out!

In all seriousness, SMT is nearly impossible to work with. If you must, get a good iron with a pointy tip. Those little resistors are fun though- you can heat up both sides then suck them up with a solder sucker

smt soldering isn't THAT hard. In my flash drive in snes cart, I broke off a smt component. To solder it back on, I just taped over half of the component, soldered one end, took the tape off, then soldered the other end.

thanks for all the replies, its noted that my dremel is p**h, i used it the other day and it wasnt very impressive, ill get a decent one, a black and decker does seem like a good choice.

I relise this is taking a while, but im taking my time, i dont want to rush, and wreck all this.

Tomorrow is the day, paying for my case from bacteria, was ment to friday but was in college all day, and then sat i slept in and missed the bank, so tomorrow, and ill get it this week YEY.

And teachable..... well, i like to jump into things with 2 feet first but i do do my research and i will listen to people who have any experience for this.

Ok, Steve paid for the kit from me a couple of days ago, I have flu at the moment so signed myself off work yesterday, so didn't get item in post; still feel sick, however got item in post today for him by 1st class recorded post, so he should have it tomorrow or Saturday (assuming someone is at his address to receive item at the time).

Looking forward to see how Steve's project progresses!
