Me too.

If the heat from the chips got hot enough to melt the plastic wiring sheath I guess the chip would be very hot indeed!

I had everything all wired up and ready to go, and wouldn't you know it, the thing won't power on. Neither the screen nor the 64 turned on so I knew it had to be somewhere between the charger and the on/off switch.

I plugged the charger into the wall and then into the portable and the little light that indicates charging didn't turn on. Then I decided to switch some of the battery wires for thicker ones on some off chance that they were too thin and wouldn't register the charge. In the process, one of the wires from the battery touched ground and everything lit up.

So the batteries are fine, just something with the charging circuit or the power jack. I'm leaning towards it not being the power jack cause the batteries can't get power to the portable when connected to the circuit.

I have two options now. I can try to order another polariod battery and use the charging circuit from there. or steal the circuit from the portable dvd player that I promised my wife I wouldn't touch. I was thinking just replace the guts and then be like "honey, this thing isn't working anymore. weird..."

Very sad. I was hoping to have it done today.

I tried with the other battery pack and I don't know what I've done wrong. It worked before :(

Well, there is option three which is to order a new charge circuit.

fixed. It was my wiring.

I'll finish what I was doing and then make up an illustration of what happened

well, this is stupid. :x

first, my portable powered up, then a few seconds later went out.

second, when I plugged in my polaroid charger, which outputs 12v to charge the batteries, it turned on, but made a loud squeel through the speakers with every light a little dim, then went quiet and everything brightened like normal. when I pull out the cord and try to turn it on again with just batteries, it flickered once and went dead.

Third, I plugged in my zenith power cord which outputs 7.5v and it turned everything on, but made the speakers buzz and lines all wavey on the screen. The red charge light turned green, which I think it's supposed to do when power is on. Then it all shut off and the little charge light started blinking red.

Then a chip in the battery circuitry caught on fire. Sorry guys. It never had these problems before. I'm about ready to give up on it.

Icky.

Well, obviously a short somewhere.

Keep at it!! I'm sure you can get a protection circuit replacement somewhere for cheap.

might have to go for the "forbidden 2nd battery"

Ok, I took a few days break from portablizing and I'm back into it. I was getting sloppy and trying to rush things. I was rushing things with techniques I hadn't tested out properly and that stuff wasn't working.

So I'm going slower and trying to make sure things work. I have the "forbidden 2nd battery" hooked up and things are working better. I've decided not to hook the 12v polaroid power cord back up to it and to only use the 7.5v zenith power cord.

step by step. I have the power working on the N64, but the screen isn't functioning properly. I pm'd Kyo about it, I cut the screen mobo a bit and I think that's the source of the problem. I'm sure that this is the final bug needing to be worked out.

here's the culprit

I think you need to fix those two traces. No idea about the capacitor. Can you show us the back?

Not super sure, but I think that the end of the capacitor has been cut off from ground, seeing as how I think I heard once that the black marking on the top of the cap signifies ground.

Here is a pic of the area concerned.

It connects to ground, which your capacitor doesn't at the moment; and yes, both traces need reconnecting too.

thanks guys. I had connected the two traces, but didn't realize how close I got to that cap. That is most likely the problem.

and now I don't get power unless it's plugged in. I didn't do anything to it different. I'm sure tomorrow it'll be something else.
