And no LaserDisc did not outlast VHS, from the way I am seeing it, they just stopped making the players now, well they still make VHS players in those DVD/VHS combo units, and I see shi*loads of those at stores.
production and distribution of VHS tapes halted december 2008 the fact that there is still 3rd party support for the format is a moot point, the major backers (JVC etc) quit supporting the format as a standalone in october of 08. pioneer JUST stopped support for laserdisc and LD/DVD combo players this month so LD wins
It always bugs me how digital is always sold as better because it's "digital". It can be, and often is, but often not.
HDTV usually always looks good, but there are still compression artifacts, usually around letters and graphics. Gradient effects have a JPEGgy look, like badly done websites. The codecs do seem to have improved over the years.
Live stuff like sports fares the worst, probably because it doesn't benefit from variable rate compression. In fact I'd say a regular DVD played on an HDTV shows less artifacting than a live HDTV broadcast.
HDTV TV shows usually look pretty good, though a bit grainy compared to their Blu-Ray companions.
Digital standard-def cable on HDTV looks like utter crap, no other way to put it. You can't really blame the resolution, since it's the same as DVD (which looks fine). DTV is just compressed up the ass and it shows.
I can also sympathize with Sony for calling out DirectTV who say their HD shows are as good as Blu-Ray. That's total BS, dish TV usually looks about the worst of anything you can get.

For that reason, I think that our 48" HDTV (3 CRT rear projection) beats the crap out of almost every LCD or plasma HDTV I've seen. Thats with our TV taking composite, and the other TVs taking component or HDMI. All from a TV thats about 6+ years old.
If digital gives me tons of squares, I'd rather take good ol' blurry analog.
That's what I like about having my PS3 hooked up to my junky 20" CRT: I still get amazing-looking graphics, and it hides all the imperfections that a higher-quality TV might expose. It's a win-win.
I don't know about some of you guys, but if I get a CD I really like, I try to find the LP version of it, as well. I like to hear what it sounded like when it was new. Well, minus the crackle.
Of course, the opposite is also true: If I get an LP I really like, I try to find that particular album on CD so I can have a portable version of it.
i steal all my music online but when i can afford to i buy that artists music on LP if its avaiable. examples being daft punks discovery album, all of ratatats albums, justices cross album and a few others
I <3 cox cable, the HD service looks downright blu-ray quality.
Im gonna go watch Ferris Bueller in remastered HD on my HD-DVR {only 5 dollars a month ontop of the regular cable {free HD}
