Kyo's big screen trimming guide [PAL] [unfinished] [56k]

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Kyo's big screen trimming guide [PAL] [unfinished] [56k]

Post by Kyo »

This guide is unfinished, and as such not quite as detailed or complete as it will be.

First of all, let me be honest with you all. I broke a screen mobo (to some extent) - the colors are displayed all wrong. It's the same effect that you get from removing a cap at the bottom. I'll look into that board later, I was going to trim a second one for a more detailed guide anyway.

Anyway, here's what I have so far, in semi-guide form.

First of all, the trimmed (semi-working) board:

Now, I'm going to guide you only through trimming the sides, because at the bottom it semi-broke (so you'll have to wait for that part)

You may notice that the inverter is still attached, I will remove it at the very end, so this guide is friendly to both worlds.

The pinouts come first:
Let's start with power, as it's vital:

example of how to do it:
Image
Avoid the other 7805, as it needs to be relocated for a massive trimming.

Next, we need some means for testing the screen. We technically don't need any video or audio pinout yet, as we won't be trimming the bottom for now, but here is the composite pin:
Image

Now, there's quite a lot more we need, I already found these pins (in fact, many audio pins like the headphone ones and rgb audio are showing in this picture, but I'll mark them in a later picture), but I don't feel like telling you these now. They're not vital anyway, as right now the guide isn't trimming the bottom, you just live without them for now please. I'll add them once we need them for the guide. We now have the means to test the screen, so let's do that. It's IMPORTANT to test the screen between every step, that means everytime you trimmed off a part, test if it still works. that way you can trace back errors.

Alright, let's start with trimming off the right, because it's the easiest. This is how we will cut:

Image

It looks like I didn't take a whole lot of pictures, so I'll take more once I trim the second screen.

Now, this side requires us no more than one relocation.
Image
See that big trace? That's the only one we need to relocate. It has already been done in the picture. Just connect the wire as pictured from the end of that capacitor to 7.5V. Fairly easy.
Image
Take one last look at it, an then cut according to the first picture. I like first making a small mark with the x-acto knife, and then using my wire cutter to break off the mobo I don't want. You can also use a saw. I like my method, but using a saw is safer. Don't come crying to me if too much broke off.

Alright, After you cut that, test the screen. It should work:

---
Okay guys, that's all for now. I don't feel like writing the rest right now, but don't you all worry - this thread will stay updated. I'll also tell you already that for the left side, you will not need to rewire anything. You can trim that off without any problems.

It looks like the Cookie Monster took some big chomps out of the circuit board. I like it! Makes me want to go see just what I can chop off and keep the screen working. I haven't done a thing to the screen I won from the portablizing competition a while back...

See if you can get rid of unnecessary circuitry on the sides and get it down to the size of just the LCD. That'd be pretty cool. Even some relocation would be satisfactory.
Hey, sup?

Yeah, it's really easier than it looks. I was surprised by my fast progress. Anyway guys, in case you're wondering why I'm posting this in such an unfinished form, it's to keep me motivated. I'll probably work on this more today (am in school right now)

How applicable to NTSC screens is this guide? It seems straightforward, but I know that there are a few differences.

I have a method for cutting the thickness of the screen by 50-60%, if I get it working, can I join the Bacteria/Kyo super-screen-power-team? :P [/u]

very applicable. The boards are very, very similar. I'll translate this guide to NTSC as soon as I get a screen. Now don't you be puttin' me in a team with bacteria, I don't like being in the same team as people who accuse me of ridiculous things and then just break contact after I put them on the spot about it

palmertech, it's very interesting you mention this. I've thought about it myself. I'd be glad to include your results in my guide (if you allow me to do so, of course!)

He Kyo i just found a neat way to slim the mobo even more check pic.

everything is fully working. Seems the top of the board was only used for the backlighting :D You can chop of the whole thing without reallocating anything

whoehoeeeee smalles boardsssss i'm gonna realocate the side aswell so that everything fits behind the lcd screen :? Wish me luck

Oh yes, I knew about that (though I didn't know you could cut off THAT much)

that's great information, thank you very much. Impressive work.

The side has many many traces, so good luck with that relocation

-ok-

You admitted in the other screen thread:
Kyo wrote:I can understand where you're coming from. If I post a guide to which you contributed, it's still me who is getting the positive feedback and such (though that's really not why I'm doing it).
So you can't say "ridiculous things" when you agreed with the argument, as per your reply, to a matter of principle. Pleased you are doing your own work now though - coming on nicely BTW.

You then made reference to:
Kyo wrote:Though you've clearly seen rekarps kind request to extend on your guide with his info, you still didn't.
Of course I didn't include it in my WIP as it wasn't relevant to my WIP as I didn't need to do the LED mod on my project. The fact the pics were in the thread from him means they were extended into the guide anyway - so you contradicted yourself.

You have posted about me "misleading" on a topic in my own forum which was entirely wrong and unfair, and similar comments here too; you accepted the fact the comment was out of order (after I banned you from the forum which you complained about) - you then changed the words to "bacteria, I'm afraid you are wrong" which was also unfair and arrogant of you. You then, in regards to the above quote about rekarp's pics said I was a hypocrite - I have got fed up with your arrogance and self importance in these and other matters over recent weeks and decided enough was enough - hence I posted "Kyo, end communication directly and indirectly with me here please, before we have major issues.". I have no desire to bring myself down to your level of comments like:
Kyo wrote:You're the one who started it. Now that I told you what I think you can't just pussy out.
As you said:
Kyo wrote:way to behave mature. You're a grown man, please stop starting little drama over insignificant things with me, yes?
Right back at 'ya. I decided to end this before it escalated, however in the above post you tried to have a dig at me again, stop it.

Bacteria, what you said to me was incredibly offensive and I will not stop it. You can't behave like an poop egress to me per PM or in the forum publicly and expect me to take it like I'm your female of the dog species. I have gotten a PM _PRAISING_ me for standing up to you, because apparently I'm not the only one who is tired of your crap.
Alright

OK

What the hell does that have to do with anything. I'm talking about you being like "oh ho ho ho, kyo! I exposed you for the dirty filthy guide stealing scum you are" (intentional exaggeration) here:
bacteria wrote:Kyo, thanks for proving my concerns were correct; you have shown your true colours. Rather than posting my work and crediting me with that part (all I asked for, quite reasonable) and then adding to it with your bits and other's bits and crediting those parts on your site, which I was perfectly happy with you doing, you clearly want to present an article as "your work" (?) and take the credit for it. Go ahead, it obviously means a lot to you.
Come on, look at what you wrote. It's a RIDICULOUS accusation from a RIDICULOUS grown man who isn't behaving the way he should. I'm throwing direct insults at you here, because I am deeply offended by your crap, in case you haven't noticed.
What the hell are you tlaking about your work in progress. Rekarp asked you to extend your guide with more useful information that was extremely on topic - you didn't. My point was that you're a hypocrite because you're doing exactly what you are accusing me of (even though I'm quite cool with taking other peoples content. There will be a lot of thank you's at the end of my guide - your name won't be on that list anymore, bacteria.)
I didn't contradict myself, you're just pretending not to get my argument (see, I can make baseless accusations as well) - he asked you to add it to the first post, which is all most will read - and you didn't.
You have posted about me "misleading" on a topic in my own forum which was entirely wrong and unfair, and similar comments here too; you accepted the fact the comment was out of order (after I banned you from the forum which you complained about) - you then changed the words to "bacteria, I'm afraid you are wrong"
At first it said "I'm afraid you are spreading misinformation again", I remember. Which came out entirely wrong (understand that I am, though it may seem so at some points, not a native speaker. These things happen to me, especially when I talk to japanese people (long story))
Now, I can see how that was out of line. You asked me to change that post, so I did. I edited it to what you quoted above, to do you a FAVOR, because you asked me to. There is nothing offensive about "I'm afraid you are wrong", how would you like me to phrase it, "bacteria, you are 100% right, but here's some information that contradicts with what you said anyway:"? You are a paranoid person, and you are being ridiculous.

On that note, I'd like to point out that I edited my post, which sounded offensive, and you didn't. Your guide still says "I don't want him to get credits for my work" or something like that, I don't know the exact words. So yeah.
which was also unfair and arrogant of you.
See above, TL;DR you're being ridiculous
You then, in regards to the above quote about rekarp's pics said I was a hypocrite - I have got fed up with your arrogance and self importance in these and other matters over recent weeks and decided enough was enough
The irony is stunning - again, see above.
- hence I posted "Kyo, end communication directly and indirectly with me here please, before we have major issues.".
In other words, your approach at solving the conflict was running away from it. Something I don't want to do, and won't do. If you're going to run away from your problems, you'll never be able to learn anything out of a conflict.
I have no desire to bring myself down to your level of comments like:
Kyo wrote:You're the one who started it. Now that I told you what I think you can't just pussy out.
Bacteria, you were throwing ridiculous accusations at me, and I was pissed off. You can't criticize the way the message is delivered and ignore it's content. That's what a weak arguer does.
As you said:

I'm impressed by your enthusiasm and thoroughness, but I have to say:
It's THE INTERNET.

And I'm losing respect for both of you; I thought you would know better than to ARGUE on the internet.

If suddenly I came out and said, "Kyo, I hate you and everything that looks like you," all you have to say is: "LOL THE INTERNET." Who gives a shyte. Do you REALLY need respect from EVERYONE you meet? Just relax a little, you know? :)

Bacteria is a very active member and a grown man. He obviously won't leave this forum, and we gotta live together, 'cause I'm not going to either. An argument is a way of solving a conflict, and as such there is nothing wrong with it.

Internet or not, if I'm being accused of ridiculous things by a not-random person, I won't take it.

Kyo, bottom line is you took offense on a comment I posted where I over-read into what you wrote and motive around what you posted, and I took offense at many of your postings which I find offensive, as you say, " crap". We spoke about that before.

That is simply why I said before to end this, I have no desire to swap insults or win points. That is why I wanted to terminate conversation with you to avoid conflict; however you rattled my cage with your post in this thread so I responded.

It's quite simple, you didn't want to pain me and I didn't want to pain you - let's leave it there and move on, yes? As they say, agree to disagree?
