Why is my PSP freezing!?

I have a PSP 1000 with 3.80 M33 custom firmware. Every time I try to play a PSX eboot, emulator, or PSP ISO it shows up in the menu fine and freezes on the first screen when I try to play it. WTF!? is there supposed to be a plugin or something on my memory card? it plays the little animated screen in the PSP menu like its working fine and I'm downloading from what I believe is a reliable/tested/working source, so what gives? I'm using an 8GB Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo Mark 2, could that be any cause for a problem? I think I clicked on "Network Update" once not realizing what I was doing (but I didn't download anything AFAIK), could that have screwed it up? I still have the menu when I push select and homebrew still shows up in the menu. I really don't know WTF is wrong, its the exact same firmware my friend has (came off the same memory stick) and it works fine. I'm ready to throw my PSP out of the window, this is so aggrivating. I modded my XBOX 1st try no problem, but this is f***ing retarded.

You need POPstation, I just figured this out myself last week.

Download a torrent with all the POPs, then upgrade to 5.00. Look in the POPs compatibility list, and check which version of the POPs plugin to use for each game.

I can help further if needed, but there are WAY better tutorials online.

I will say that 5.00M33 works great with PSP ISO's. I was very happy to be able to play my copy of Gran Turismo 2 on the go as opposed to being locked down on a console.

but this doesn't explain why the emulators and actual PSP games (CSO) aren't working, unless the sources I'm downloading from have them designed for the latest firmware :\

Not sure if it will be this simple, but:
1. Hold R and turn on the PSP.
2. Go down to "Configuration ->" and hit X.
3. Go down to "UMD Mode" and hit X until it is labeled: "UMD Mode (currently: M33 driver -NO UMD-)"
4. Go up to "Back" and hit X.
5. Go down to "Exit" and hit X.

(Depending on what custom firmware you have, you're probably able to press the "Select" button when you're in the XMB. If the VSH menu comes up, you can go down to "UMD ISO MODE" and press the left or right button until it says "M33 driver.")

I don't know if this works or not, but if it's not loading any PSP games then you should try this. It would probably also help to get the POPS loader plug-in from Dark-AleX's website. Make sure to update to the newest custom firmware too. It's currently v5.00 M33-4.

OK, it turned out it was just a really messed up PSP. Apparently the reason it wasn't reading games went beyond the UMD. So, I have another one now (thankfully there was another PSP with a broken UMD, so I just swapped it out) and it works great. Can anyone recommend me a good PSX -> PSP converter that can be used with an actual disc? I have a few games that I think would be troublesome to find in ISO form. If you have to do it in PM, that's fine.

rip the ISO from the disc using Alcohol 120% ( or Clone CD ) and then convert it using PSX2PSP ( i recommend v 1.4 )

what about for Mac? will toast work? I have Parallels, but CD stuff can be a bit iffy with that. I think reading works OK now that I think about it, its usually burning that screws up. Would Toast Titanium do the job?

New question, didn't want to start a whole new thread, and also its somewhat relevant to the topic:

If I were to try to install custom firmware on a V88 or whatever the incompatible PSP Slim motherboard is called, what would happen? I tried to install custom firmware on a "parts" slim PSP that had a bad UMD and after the system would only load the background and wouldn't go any further (which was OK because we needed the parts at the time anyway, it was mostly an experiment). Is that what happens? If not, does it just kind of go "can't install" and that's it? My friend has a Slim PSP and wants me to put custom firmware, but I'm not sure which motherboard it is and I'm sure he'd be pissed if it just ruined his PSP. If it did screw up, could I just go back to recovery mode and reinstall original firmware? Is there a way to check by serial number if its a v88? I know you can load some program on the memory card, but that's a whole lot of mess to go through when it seems like you could just go by serial number or something.

If you try to use the battery with a TA88v3 board then it wont get far enough to do anything. It will start the PSP in service mode, but will not load the IPL that allows you to hack the PSP because the TA88v3 board has the signing bug fixed in the pre-IPL.

In otherwords, if he has the unhackable motherboard, it will not do anything. When you put a normal battery back in, it will boot as if you never put in the battery.

that's good to know, that must mean the one that froze up was just really messed up. It turns out he probably has a 3001 so he's going to try to return it and buy a used 1001.
