Making SMS controller.

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

Making SMS controller.

Post by freeshiny »

Hi,

I'd like to make my own SMS controller however I don't have any spare controller boards left. One could make a NES controller using only a single 4021, and a bunch of resistors. Where could I find the scheme depicting SMS' controller? I'm pretty new to the Sega hacking.

Cheers!

I had schematic for sega genesis but can`t find it anywhere, not even the bookmarked page....I know it uses 74hc157....
The good thing is that you don`t need any circuit for sms joypad since you need only two buttons, each wire represents a button and a ground is common...... check the pinouts here:

The Sega Genesis does not have any internal logic if you want to make a 3 button. A 6 button on the other hand....

3 Button pads do not. Its just a pcb with carbon contacts.

Wow thats allot different then some of the ones I have seen. Thanks for sharing. I could have sworn that the 3 Button had no logic in it.

Huh... That's odd...

Well anyway, this thread isn't really about the genesis at all. Sorry for starting it.

Like this?

So it is like this, with one line per control?

Which resistance should I use?

you don`t need resistor, button is directly connected to ground, so for left button just put switch between pin3 and ground, for button right pin4 to ground and so on.... power (vcc) is used for models with IC

Whoa, that was super-easy. Nice way to start making your own joypads. Couldn't find an easier first time project :D

Here are the pics, if anyone cares: http://picasaweb.google.com/ljubomir.simin/SMSJoypad#

Thanks for the help!

Btw. Some 3 Buttons have internal logic. These controllers can be used as 6 button controllers by pressing start in some 6 button games. Start toggles which row the 3 buttons emulate.
