I tried installing it from inside XP, it didn't work.

Would "extracting" the iso to the hard drive, editing the boot.ini to point to setup.exe, deleting the XP stuff using a liveCD, and then booting from the hard drive and installing to the same partition? Or would I have to start it from within DOS? Or just get a DVD-R and find someone with a DVD burner.

Just a word of advice, don't run CCleaner's Registry Fixer.

If you do, don't even try to get Sidebar or Paint to work ever again because they will make Windows 7 BSoD.

I'm kinda sad now actually, I should have made a backup of my registry! Stupid me

I love Paint!

EDIT: Must have been a fluke, but Sidebar still refuses to work! Ugh!

It worked fine for me. I mounted the ISO onto the virtual DVD drive, and just opened it up and ran setup. It restarted itself a few times(like it should), and it all worked. I bet you could just mount and restart and it would work. I'm pretty sure you shouldn't extract it though. (just use the exact file you dloaded)

Any new ideas on how to auto force aero to work?

Ya. I've already tried that. Doesn't do anything. but there is a dwm.exe running which I find wierd because isn't aero the only Dynamic Window thing that uses the manager?

EDIT: think it has anything to do with not being registered yet?

Though I would post a screeny of what it looks like running on a crap PC.

512mb/Intelgrated Graphics Chips/P4 2.7(or something)

1024 x 768

No aero activated

I'm having to re-download Windows 7. My iso was messed up. I kept running into a glitch while trying to install the 64 bit version to my pc.
(I think the iso was messed during download. My installed copy of XP on this pc has been bad lately about messing up perfectly good files while downloading them.)

I got the download now going on my Mom's acer laptop. (Which is the newest and most powerful computer in the house at the moment. And it runs vista, not XP)

After i downloading it on there. I'm going to burn it to a disk and try to install it to my computer again. Maybe by downloading it on her laptop. The ISO won't be messed up this time around and the Installer will run fine with no glitches on my PC.

I'm going to give this a shot for my laptop, maybe do dual-boot.

I really have no quams with Vista on my big PC (except how slow it boots and the "vista hangover" where even when booted it takes a minute before getting up to speed) but on my laptop it's not as good. Granted the specs are a lot less than my big PC, but still, not so hot.

We'll see!

It's quicker, lighter and much faster.

Tried it on my laptop right now. 32 bit.

The processor is always pegged at 32-34% when the slide show is on though. :/

A few questions-

-What install options do you have?
-If there are optional things to install, what is the "standard" install size?
-What is the smallest install size possible?

I have an EeePC 901 with two SSDs, a 4GB and 16GB. I have OSX86 on the 16GB, and XP on the 4GB. I haven't used XP since I installed OS X, so I'm thinking about installing Windows 7, just for kicks. Thoughts on the subject?...

I didn't mess around with the installer too much (just let it do its thing so I could play with the OS), but the final install size was a few gigs. (I've added a bunch of crap since then, and didn't really take note of the used drive space on a clean install.)

But once it's up and running it only uses about 500 MB of my 1 GB of RAM. It doesn't seem as hungry as Vista. (Which makes sense, since they want to finally retire XP in 2014 after a 13 year run.) According to PC World, all you need is:

1GHz processor (32- or 64-bit)
1GB of main memory
16GB of available disk space
DX9 graphics with 128MB of memory (for the Aero interface)
DVD-R/W drive.

I think the line about the optical drive is just there because you 'need' one to make use of the .ISO.

Also the desktop Gadgets just broke for no reason the other day. (The menu and control panel don't do jack.) Anyone know of a fix?

EDIT: Running 3DMark Vantage (the trial version that's locked on Performance.). It rendered a total of 167 frames in the Jane Nash demo.

EDIT 2: Holy. Crap. I think I just set a new standard for suckiness.

Time for a new compy. But I guess it goes to show you that anything, even a relatively junk PC with bad components, can run Windows 7.
