Whats wrong with it?

Hi guys. Im a new guy here, and have been reading about how to make portables for about 3 weeks. Well, a couple of days ago, I decided I was going to start building my n64 portable so I went to the local used game store and got about 3 n64s in the cheapo bin. I came home and they all powered up and played games fine. So then I started taking them apart, and was working on them very gently because I have heard 64's fry easy. Well, to cut to the chase, now all the systems I bought all power on fine, but I cant seem to get audio/video. It make a flash on the screen, but then it just stays black. I don't have much experience either in this stuff so maybe pictures or links to places and things that can help me would be nice. Please help!

What would be more useful would be what you're using to power the screen. I have a sneaky suspicion you're trying to power it with AAs or something, or some other inadequate power source. It powering on and then right back off is a pretty good sign of improper power supply.

Otherwise, take a pic or two of your setup. We can help you easier that way.

I guess I should have been more specific. The systems I have are powered by the power cord, and are still hooked up to the T.V. I have my Psone Screen but I haven't attempted to connect the 64 to it until I have found why it isn't getting its AV. Also, the power stays on so I don't think they are fried. Could it maybe just be my AV cord is too old and I need a new one? Thanks guys.

The AV cord can be a problem, especially if the previous owner(s) flexed it a lot. Try replacing it or even hack-jobbing with some wire.

I think the game might not be in all the way. Though thats improbable if it did that on all your systems... Try putting the top casing back on (no need to screw it on) and see if the games work. Maybe you're putting them it at a slight angle and they need to be guided by the case.

Define what you mean by "made a flash on the screen" and other things you experienced.

did you leave the jumper/memory expansion pack in or take it out?

Well there is basically a white flash in the middle of the screen like it is trying to get video, but then nothing else happens. Also, there is no sound when it powers on. This is exactly what I think G-Force experienced in the Troubleshooting your N64 thread. And to answer collinE I took the jumper pack out. But due to that flash in the screen, I still have hope that they aren't broken, but are just taking a little nap.

Take out the game. Take out the jumper/expansion pak, and put it back in. Now turn the N64 on without a game, just the jumper pak, for 5 seconds or so. Then pop a game in and it should work.

No need to thank me. The oldest post I found that had that trick was by Gamelver in this thread (second post). I figure I either read that thread and remembered it, or the person that wrote what I read had seen that post.
