Are there any known hacks/add-ons to improve clarity of a GBO screen? Or perhaps a compatible screen replacement (not the clear plastic usual replacement screen, the actual screen)

Sorry Gunk but until me or Bibbin or others get around to backlighting an old Gameboy there's not to mods you can do to the screen.

If you dont want to bother with LED's just put on a new backing on the screen. I suggest a broken GBP's backing with a couple of downsizing cut's.

Ye this post is old but concerning GBO backlight - you can get this kit that works pretty well: http://nonelectronics.com/pbtutorial.html. It's expensive but i figured it was worth it because i perform in a lot of dark clubs using a gameboy and LSDJ.

Just wanted to say that I have been working on this a bit, talked with Bibin about it.

You can remove the polarization film from a DS Lite LCD, strip the GBO lcd polar film, and replace it. 2 decades of advancement in polarization technology helps improve the definement of the blacks, better shade balance, and way better light transmission if you want to use a backlight.

With some diffusion paper as a backing (No backlight) and DS Lite polar film, my DMG looks pretty sick (Now I need some spray on silicone adhesive to hold the layers together, or I may just try to have it held together with a foam pad or something).

Two tips for you:
Make a guide on replacing BOTH sides of the DMG polar film. Gets rid of green tint.

Get/make some 4 LED backlights. I have made two from scavenged DS Lite LCDs, and they look great

You need some diffusive plastic though, or else the corners will light up more than the rest of the display.
