I just dug my old sega gamegear out of the closet and it has a problem. I charged the battery pack and installed new batteries trying both. Anyway, when you switch it on, the redlight comes on and the screen powers up, but just for a second. Then both switch back off and neither does anything until you switch it off and back on again when it repeats that process. Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong with it? Thanks.

Yup, you blew a fuse.

You need to check every fuse on the board with a multimeter until one (or more than one) doesn't come up as working. Bridge these.

There is a good chance the battery is at too low of a charge to properly function; this is similar to playing gameboy with dead batteries; it turns on for a bit then dies.

How did this turn out for you, 1987k20?

I had this same problem with a unit I picked up for no cost at a used game store; I took it apart, replaced all the capacitors, and it worked fine when I was done.

The strange part about that particular repair is that I didn't replace any of the ones on the power supply PCB.

this is a common problem with these units the battery wires fry from age. its a simple solution. purchase a 9V 1.33A Power adaptor.
the same thing was happening to mine so i gave the adaptor a try and it botted up great. be careful in choosing adaptors though some do not fit the generic game gear power slot. if you need the url for purcahsing the 9V 1.33A Adaptor then tell me.
