RETRO DUO Controller Issue...

Hey, everyone.

Here's the situation: I bought my mother a brand-new Retro Duo for Christmas, and it works like a dream...with one exception.

She oves the original 8-bit version of "Tetris", but I noticed that during gameplay the Retro Duo controllers wouldn't do the "quick drop" correctly. Apparently, there appears to be a problem with the down arrow on both directional "cross" pads.

So, I'd like to be able to remove the cross from the RD controller, and replace it with the one from an original SNES controller. Additionally, I'd like to keep the blue plastic cross from the RD one, but with the functinality of the SNES model.

I hope my request isn't worded too confusingly. Is this modification possible, and if so, how could it be done without permanently damaging the RD controller?

Any and all help with this issue is most appreciated. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me with this.

You can easily swap the rubber contact pads as you indicate, however you would be far better checking first that the issue is the controller and not the "emulation" by using a proper official SNES controller. If that works, you are frankly better staying with the official controller.

Or, if that works, just swap the internals. Put original SNES hardware in the RD's controller housing. It should slide right in.

My sister still has her old SNES deck (which hasn't been used in at least a year), and she agreed to let me borrow the controller for the Duo. It works fine, except the Start button has to be mashed down. That's why I just want to modify the D-pad so it will have the Retro's blue cross and the SNES functionality.

So, I've never taken a SNES controller apart, and as far as I know this modification isn't in Ben's book. Could someone post instructions for fixing the cross pad, complete with photos? Thanks!

My suggestion is to just swap the controller boards. Clean the SNES controller board and buttons. It's dirty. That's why you need to mash the start button. I can't do pics cuz I don't have any RD's laying around to do this too. But it should be pretty self-explanatory.

Take both controllers apart. Take the RD's controller PCB out of the RD case. And put in the SNES controller PCB. Put the RD controller back together. Then take the RD controller PCB and put it in the SNES controller and screw it back together.

Congrats, you just swapped the boards and should have two very working controllers.

I beleive lovablechevy put the guts of a SNES controler in a RD controller shell.
