Reducing a PSone screen mobo - guide

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

yes. The top of the board, as Rekarp posted it. Everything else can be chopped and relocated regardless of what you do.

Thats how much more you can cut while doing the LED mod. I will search to see if I have a more up close image.

Edit// nope no such image. But you basically just cut straight along the top.

You can also cut a part off on the "left" side of the board, which is just a ground plane. This way you can get your ABXY buttons closer to the screen and thus a slightly not to wide portable.
You could also relocate the transformer. Only 6 wires, doesn't sound too hard.

Indeed, easy to relocate the transformer. No reason you can't just rewire it. I thought that was what I had to do originally, but the placement of the screen ribbon cable meant the bottom of the board needed removal not the top. It's all about angles, if the screen is not flush to the mobo, the position of the mobo is higher than normal due to the angle of the ribbon cable; that is what made my calculations originally different.

As you say, you can easily trim the bottom, top and sides of the screen mobo and still keep the original backlight if you want.

I feel this is the best thread to post this in - I am now working on my guide.

a lot of this information used to be avaiable on these forums, relating to cutting down the screen board somewhat anyway (removing the transformer et al) but that was probably before the forum move so a couple years ago

Alright: Update. I am done finding all the pinouts (decided to find my own, since bacteria seems quite protective of his work)

I found that 4 of the caps are used for the speakers. I'm going to see how the sound is without them.

I am not protective of my work, silly comment as I post everything in my guides - so how can I be protective when I share everything? Care to elaborate on your comment? I only said before if you use my information to give me credit, which is a perfectly reasonable request. I did spend hours working it all out and posting it after all.

The connections you mention for the speakers I posted here on page 1. The only connections I didn't mark are for the volume and contrast capacitor connections, easy to find, I just didn't need them; in fact SifuF posted those four connections himself anyway. I think that covers the connections pretty well. A fair bit of the grounding can go too, as the board is only 2 layer.

I think Kyo answered your question, but I'll answer as well. I think a picture will provide the clearest answer. Everything seen above the screen's metal border can be removed if you're replacing the backlight with LEDs. The stuff the red arrows are pointing to? Don't need 'em. Make sure you don't accidentally remove anything from the back of the board, but you can pretty much just chop everything off above the LCD. Rekarp's picture demonstrates this perfectly.

protective not as in keeping it to yourself, but as in having trouble letting it go. What I mean by that is that you said yourself you had problems being only a part of the guide instead of being clearly credited for what you did - which is why you posted this (along with wanting to share the info) - To let you keep that, I'm not using your work. Besides, I had fun doing it myself (something which you know by our case discussion - I like to do), so maybe calling you protective was a bit of an excuse even. You don't have all the info I need anyway (example: headphone pins, got these now) - as I'm going to cut off more than you

Anyway, I'm pretty much done with the easy part: The sides. Did you guys know that you can get away with trimming the sides as much as SifuF did (and slightly more) with relocating no more than two wires!

Kyo, thanks for proving my concerns were correct; you have shown your true colours. Rather than posting my work and crediting me with that part (all I asked for, quite reasonable) and then adding to it with your bits and other's bits and crediting those parts on your site, which I was perfectly happy with you doing, you clearly want to present an article as "your work" (?) and take the credit for it. Go ahead, it obviously means a lot to you.

Bacteria, your accusations are laughable. I have not even begun to do the bottom yet. I never said I wouldn't credit you, in fact, I said I would, whether I use your stuff or not. Techknott wasn't able to help me either, and SifuF's picture I didn't use either, and I'll still credit them, because they at least tried to help (or did anyway). I made no secret of the fact that at the end of my article, everyone INCLUDING you would get a big thank you and an explanation of what they did. You knew that becasue I told you. Way to behave mature, bacteria, way to behave mature. You're a grown man, please stop starting little drama over insignificant things with me, yes?

Besides, you're a hypocrite. Though you've clearly seen rekarps kind request to extend on your guide with his info, you still didn't.
