CHALLENGE! DS/PSP ultra portable

Look, for the DS and PSP to be discussed on these forums in any capacity other than in comparison to our portables as a benchmark of how advanced they are(and since we make Ataris, NES, and SNES, that doesn't even matter), they have to be modded.

I issue a challenge to all of us, even Ben. Build a playable portable with the guts and screens of both a DS and PSP. Also, see if you can make battery packs that last longer. ^^. You may collaborate with other forumgoers in this task, even dividing responsibilities amongst others, such as electrical design, mechanical design, cosmetic design, and actual construction.

The winner gets....well...the DS/PSP they personally build or access to those plans, and my respect. ^^ Not enough? How about a working NTSC NES board for the one person who contributes the most(shipped from Ohio, USA)?

No offense MM007, but this is a bad idea. There is a reason that every thread that degrades into DS vs PSP gets closed. Because as much as I hate to say it but the majority of people here are too immature to have a debate on the subject. It always spirals out of control into a flame war where the insults escalate past the systems and into peoples personal life. We have to face that they are two entire different systems, and the fans of either will never think highly of the other.

You can't kill fanboy-ism.

The above is my opinion on the debate between which is better, the DS or PSP. Unfortunately I dont know how to read tonight and for some reason thought this topic was about that. I apologize, I have been too busy trying to setup a slackware server and haven been paying attention to what I was reading.

This could actually be done. You could have a wide-style system (like the PSP or the original GBA), and you could have the DS screens side-by-side on top of the PSP screen, and with the backings removed from them (so that while the DS is turned off, you can see straight through the DS screens to the PSP screen below). You could then put the PSP buttons on the face of the system just as they are on the PSP. You would wire the directional pad and the buttons to the DS board. At the top of the system, you could have a "SPDT Centre Off" switch at the top to control the power to the systems - when the switch is in the middle, both systems are off, but sliding it left or right turns on one of the systems depending on which direction you moved the switch.

I don't have a PSP to spare, but if someone wants to mail me one, I'll gladly get started on this project

I know I'm not spending roughly 500 dollars on stuff I am just going to hack up. And wtf does "^^" mean anyways?

No offense but i dont think this is a good idea. First the system would have to have 3 screens that would kind of look stupid. second of all the system would be kind of pointless seriously think about it if some one wanted to combine a ds with a psp they would have to spend a lot of money to do it at least $400 for the two systems and then all the little things to blend them together it would be outrageously expensive and you would risk ruining a ds or a psp or both. I think it would be fun to have both in one system but building it yourself would take tons of hours and tons of money.

sounds like a good idea accept what about the buttons?
i mean you could use the ds buttons or the psp butons why not just hot glue them back to back ^ ^

Um, I think this idea is really NOT that great personally. My yearly website bill is on the horizon and unless people want to make donations please keep threads about pie-in-the-sky "3 screened systems" to a minimum.

This sit is about hacking big game systems into portable units. Due to their digital proprietary screens there's not much you can do with an already-portable system.

What's stopping you from putting a PayPal donation link on the front page? Surely the combined income from that, the book, and sales of portables would be enough to pay your fees.

You could always try to make the PSP screen display DS too, not the touch screen though, thats too hard, and have a smaller display for PSP, not such a bad idea if you think about it, just very hard to do.

You would need a lot of money, time, and knowledge of electrical circuits.

You would have to build a very complex circuit, possibly with multiple custom ICs, that would get both screen inputs from the DS, convert them into one big screen input for the PSP screen (and filling in the extra space around the signals with black), then feed all of that into the PSP screen.

It would be a very complex process.
