Big NESp Decision- Want Opinions

I have this pretty big decision to make. I plan to build my first portable soon. It will be a NESp. I've narrowed down the plan to two options:

1) Use a Yobo FC and DealExtreme 3" or 3.5" screen. Use a software case (like a dvd case but way thicker) as a case.

2) Use an original NES and PSOne screen. Obviously use a bigger case. Any ideas?

Right now I'm leaning toward option 2.

FYI on the deal extreme 3.5" screen, there are no linear regulators for the 12v line. So if you are planning on running the system with less than 12 volts, either hope someone else figures it out or figure it out your self. I know because I have this screen.

Original NES imo.

Schemmelly can you pm me some info on that 3.5" screen? I was going to use it and I could use some info on it so I can see if its worth getting. If not im going AEIcomp again.

I am involved in a project with another member here. Can't give you any details, but it might give you the board you need - you might like to wait to see the results of the work over the next months...

If you are planning on making an NESp with the original board, I'm working on cutting down the size of the board itself; this is what Bacteria is referring to in part. It will be a simple drop in replacement (U6 goes to U6; R4 goes to R4, etc.); the only downside is desoldering and resoldering all those components.

If you're going to do that, do it without the lockout chip.

There will be several versions of this; the first one will not have the lockout chip, so as to keep the size down.

Sounds like an interesting project. You should probably include pins to make it extra easy to mod (and maybe holes/solder points for an (optional) onboard video mod, if the space is available)

I don't want to wait a few months. I probably won't have the skill or insanity to do the board swap either.

I'm almost certainly going to go with the real NES and PSone screen. I think I can source a NES and I'm working out a deal for a PSone screen (and a PSone).

Just want to tell you guys that this is going nowhere anytime soon. So basically I just blew $35 on a book that I'm not even going to use, and wasted hours looking stuff up on the internet.

I don't think this counts as blogging, because it's very much related to the project. As in, no project going to happen.

XCVG - suggestions to your Father:

* No idea your age, but you must be young from the sound of it. Tell him there is no skill buying some fad console and playing it, however learning to make a portable takes skill, commitment and improves your "life skills", which he, as a Father, can only endorse.

* Point out how much a PSP/DS is including a few games, as you naturally will need lots of new games, won't you

. Then compare that to the cost of making a portable console system where the games cost next to nothing. Financially beneficial for him.

* You can buy from people here, or e-bay; doesn't matter. I am sure he buys things from the internet?

* Hobby - is it better to learn basic electronics and problem solving or sat on your butt watching television?
