Yes, thinking about it there is a very good reason your method works fine in your case and not in mine - the backing case piece in your system is shallow, so putting in a shelf and screwing the two halves together will be strong; the issue in my design is that the two case halves are more central, so without reinforcement (as I did) there would be lots of flexing potentially. The reason my case halves meet more in the middle is that I wanted a very rounded finish to all the sides, if you try to make that out of one piece you will never get it out of a mold! I also had to plan the angles so one case half was big enough to take the controls and PSone screen mobo, the other half the console and cart / CD drive, and batteries. Took a massive amount of planning, I can tell you!

So yes, I can see completely why your method works for your case; and why it doesn't for mine.

Good work so far, holes look nice and neat, and evenly spaced. Excellent! Should be a nice portable when done.

I know you mentioned about painting in white - however look at your last pic:

...if you spray paint it in a cream or porcelain colour, you will get a slightly lighter version - like:

Colour is very subjective; just mentioning this in case you don't want to use white but use an off-white shade.

I cut some holes for the power switch, power plug thing, and indicator lights.

and that's it. I can't put off painting any longer. I don't know what I'm going to do about a logo (whether I'll have one or not) but I'm going to go get some krylon fusion soon.

What do you people think? Does the style of my portable look like it should be cleaner and plain or brighter colors and logo?

I MSpainted the concept my wife thought would look good

I like the design, but the colors seem too bright for my taste. Does it seem too much to anyone else or should I do it?

I don't like that bright neon green, hurts my eyes. Maybe something duller haha

Up to you if you want it to look nice or garish, your system after all; however bear in mind if the colour is strong it will make your eyes tired far quicker. Probably best to stay with white / cream / black / grey; if you must go for bright, consider the Nintendo console colours, some look ok (eg purple) some look bad (eg orange or teal). Having a colour can make your system look like a toy if you aren't careful (again, look at some of the Nintendo colour systems). Whatever colour you choose, yes, go for a logo!

I can say, two tone works really well and is very effective - black and white or black and porcelain (cream). That is what I choose - lovely!

Ok, I'm going to the store. I appreciate the input, guys. After hearing opinions, I think I'm doing it blue like in the picture, or black like bacteria suggested. White is too common, porcelain matches my toilet, and green really is too bright. I'll decide when I have the two in front of my face.

and I'm going to go for a lustre finish. Not too matte and not too glossy. Not sure how I'll do it, but I guess I'll just wing it.

"porcelain matches my toilet" - indeed, nice colour isn't it? Like saying blue looks like blueberries!

As to finish, "Satin".

Plastik-Cote is excellent indeed, excellent primer too. Don't forget to get the primer, colour and also clear spray varnish (satin finish).

sorry, I decided not to go with black, but blue. I took a look at the blue controller I hacked for this after bacteria said something about Nintendo colors and figured it matched.

I just bought a PS2 slim a couple days ago to portablize and I want to make it black. I don't want to be the guy who just makes black portables so I decided to mix it up.

I've been waiting all morning for it to get warmer cause I'm afraid the cold will effect the paint. I didn't think I'd have to worry about it being almost freezing in Las Vegas, but I guess I do.

I didn't do too bad. Almost an exact match to the shade of blue on the 64 controller. I was sad that I spent all kinds of time cleaning the plastic only to have the dirty desert blow nasty crap onto the sticky paint. I guess I can wet sand it off tomorrow and give it another go.

ha! I'm pretty sure there isn't anything left besides sanding and more painting that needs to be done directly to the case. And I've got my hot glue gun ready so my internals will be solid.

oh! I forgot to mention. I was always planning to do a built in memory card, but I remembered starfox being the first 64 game I played and the rumble pack that came with it. I couldn't just give up on rumble so I'm relocating the connector so that it'll stick out the bottom.
