When the Doctor is close to dying, to stop himself from doing so he regenerates and in doing so changes his physical apperance. Writers did it so more than 1 actor could play him after the previous actor quit.

Can only do it 12 times, so after this actor there will only be 2 more before he's as dead as a doornail.

Unless he cheats, like the Master did.

Doesn't he have to meet that one gal before he can die, the one in the library episode, and take her as a companion? Or, are such paradoxes allowed in the Whoverse? Has the British playing of Dr. Who started back up yet(I know it isn't playing in the States yet)?

We've only had the Christmas special. Starts again in spring I think.

But he only needs to regenerate if he has life threatening injuries (as in they should bag this new guy and have David Tennant stay for another 30 years)

I thought Tennant was doing two or three specials and that was going to be all for 2009 and the next season will start in 2010.

Smith will first appear on TV screens as the 11th Doctor in 2010.

He was cast over Christmas and will begin filming for the fifth series of Doctor Who in the summer. Tennant is filming four specials in 2009.
