Pimp My Forum

Post by exploding.monkey »

I've seen other forums with a bunch of 'extras' like an arcade with the flash games made by members, where the forum categories divided into more categories (eg. Forum 42 divides into Sports, Music, Activities ect.)
and where it even showed the members Birthdays (okay, thats not that important, but you get the idea)!

Are these good ideas?

we're not active enough for that seperation. 42 is just fine the way it is, IMO. Things like arcades and such are really really unnecessary. Just grab the portable you made and play on that

Fixed it for you. ;)

If you want to go play Flash games, go to Newgrounds or Addicting Games.

where the forum categories divided into more categories [...]
and where it even showed the members Birthdays
Phpbb 2 doesn't allow for subforums. The new version, phpbb 3, does. It's just a matter of somebody with a login to the server and the SQL system installing the new forum and tweaking it with the ads and custom banner. (And moving the "poster info" column to the left. It doesn't belong on the right.) We could have a separate subforum in each console forum for reference (pinouts, photos of the internals, etc) instead of having one sticky full of information. (One large post loaded with info confuses 'the n00bz'. It makes them go "TLDR GIMME A STEP BY STEP GUIDE!!!1".)

The problem with more specific subforums is that the topics will get less views and less help, whereas now if you go to the genesis section or something, you see every active topic and can help people without having to look in the specific subforum where that topic is.

I think anything more than what we have right now is overkill. This isn't that active of a forum, we get maybe 3 active threads a day in any given section (with the exception of 42), we don't really need any more.

Not Stolen. The Forum I'm talking about is Eclipse, a MMORPG making forum.

Well, great, nothing wrong with having games on a game making forum.

....Except that we are not a game making forum.

Why? What's the point? Just more info that isn't relevant in the least. I don't need to know birthdays or play games in order to build a portable or hack a console.

The most 'pimped' I've ever seen a forum is a few 'fun' topics. I can name a few:

Word Association: Where one member posts a word, then another posts a related (in some way) word, and it keeps going. Pretty much post-count spam.
Story: This is where you create a story. Basically one member posts an Official Stardard Unit of a story, then another, then another. The Official Standard Unit is usually a sentence but can also be a paragraph. Usually you end up with a really stupid story that has no direction, no real storyline, and never ends. But it's fun to do :D
Joke Thread: Post good jokes for the whole forum to read! This can turn out really good or really bad depending on the members.
Funny Picture Thread: Post funny pictures. Sometimes they end up following the theme of the forum, sometimes not. Usually pretty funny.

That's all I can think of right now.

Okay, my suggestions weren't that good, but it's nice to have extras!

I'm not talking about posts, I mean like extras and stuff...

The only thing I want to see done is a member feedback system similar to ebay, that will put a rating underneath our avatars whether we are good/bad traders, buyers, sellers, etc.

I've suggested this several times to no avail. There are even phpBB mods out there to do this; It'd just be a simple case of an admin installing one. Easy as pi.

No, not easy. Forum admins can't install mods; that requires knowing the FTP and SQL logins. Only one admin has that knowledge, and he's pretty busy.

Well it wouldn't be hard to get in contact with that certain admin seeing as there are other admins active on this board, no?
