Oh, sorry bacteria. No, it was a bit of a joke. I forget sometimes that we're not all American and it was kinda subtle anyway.

You see, I voted John McCain for president and Barack Obama, who won, is a liberal. Liberals are left and conservatives are right. Hence the "left" hook. Naturally, I'm a bit saddened.

Nobody likes to admit that their portable is on hiatus, but in hindsight, I guess it was. Sifuf's portable got me motivated again and it made me sad that it'd been so long since I updated that my thread was about to run off the first page.

here's the idea to keep the two halves of the case from sliding apart. thanks khaag

and here it is modified a little. it works. I cut the pieces of plastic from an unsuccessful vacform. They go all around the front side of the case.

and here is the back with the holes for the Z button and cartridge.

still, I'm nervous about painting and that's partially what had kept me from moving on. I need to make some screw holes and posts and then I won't be able to procrastinate it further.

Don't paint it then, white is sexiest.

The lip you mention will not be adequate probably as it will stop one half of the case from flexing but the other half (with the strips) will flex. That is why I didn't use that method - I reinforced both halves with perspex then used screws to secure both sections together, via screwposts - works well.

But yeah, I think you should paint it. Most vac formed portables are white.

Good idea to spray paint it anyway, to get rid of imperfections. Use some good primer first.

I'm going to have to paint it. If you look at the front on page two... it's kind of unavoidable.

before I move on, explain this a little more. I don't want a potential problem, but I don't exactly understand what you're saying.

Spray painting will be a good idea, trust me.

To explain what I mean about the two case halves - if you have a lip on one half, it will stop the other half from flexing so much by in effect doubling the strength at that point; however it will not stop the half with the lip from flexing; so in effect, counter productive. My method using the perspex around the inside edges reinforces both sections and makes them resist flexing - a far better solution.

If you alternated attaching the perspex teeth to the top and bottom case, would it be more stable?

Yes, more stable, however not so easy to put the two halves together, reliant on both halves being exactly matching to each other, issue with flexing and also issue remaining about how to screw both sections together.

In contrast, the method I used, you can correct minor spaces where the two halves may not match perfectly, each two case halves are made rigid so won't flex and easy to mount screw posts to secure the two halves together.

So yes, using alternate teeth is better but far from ideal. The reinforced approach I used works well.

It was nerve racking to make the screw posts and drill the screw holes. I was so scared that I'd ef it up, but it ended up turning out fine.

The screws and posts were dremeled off the Zenith screen's case (knew I kept it for a reason). I made them recessed just enough to keep the screws hidden, but not so much that they're so far down you can't get a screwdriver in or see if you'd unscrewed it at all. Does that bug anybody else when they're like that?

here's the screws at work inside the case. First time using hot glue on the case.

As far as the last several posts go... The lip I made was more than sufficient. Everything screwed together feels nice and solid even when pressure is added to it. I think if there was a problem I would have just done the "teeth method" suggested by jjhammerstein. Bacteria's "far better solution" works well in his portable as there are two separate halves, but I'm afraid it could get in the way if I plan on putting something up against the side.

I suppose you'll see paint on it next. egh.
