What would you guys think of maybe all splitting the cost of a dedicated server and having set time we all try to get on it and play?

Or can someone maybe dedicate an old computer to be our server

Or does someone even want to host one right now for us to play on for the night?

I can't, I have a hardware firewall thingy (D-link) and can't open all the ports necessary for hosting.

I can't, either. I tried setting up a dedicated server, but it couldn't connect to the VAC servers and wouldn't show up in Steam. (Not even as a LAN game.)

The server I'm on now is pretty empty, though. I'm sure they wouldn't mind a few more people coming in.

Any chance I could get an invite into the Benheck Steam Group? Steam name's Tromoly, thanks in advance.

Bioshock is worth ten times 5 bucks, that's what I paid back in the day and it's awesome. Long too, probably at least 12 hours.

I've been playing L4D on Steam (PC) a lot lately if anyone else wants to play sometime...

yeah all my friends got it for the 360 and not one of them has a TV able to handle me reading the menu. though that games not hard to figure out. Dam I need a harder laptop. Shooting up radioactive superpowers in your arm looks impressionable, like it could warp my fragile little mind.

Aww, I wish my computer could run it; I'd jump on that.

Same here. My desktop can barely play TF2 at 15 FPS, and the lappy crashes any Source 2007 games running in DirectX 9 mode. :( Oh well, a quality GTX 260 superclocked + Q9550 setup can cost less than $800 if you shop around. (And it will get cheaper as time goes on. Can't wait for my tax refund...)

It would be nice if someone could set up a dedicated Garry's Mod server for the forums, though.

The problem is, I don't possess $800. Even if I did, I'd be very hesitant to spend it on a new PC just for the sake of a few games while this laptop, which isn't even two years old yet, is still working perfectly.

I'd love to try Gmod, but I don't know if my laptop could run it, and I can't get Gmod 9 just to see if it'd run because I don't have "Counter-Strike: Source," "Day of Defeat: Source," or "Half-Life 2: Deathmatch." I hate how you have to have all three of those games...

You don't need DoD:S or HL2:DM, just Counter-Strike.

Actually you don't even need that. Just remove the "counter-strike" folder from the Gmod 9 addons folder and it should run as long as you have at least one Source game installed. You'll just see lots of big red ERRORs floating around if you try to play online. (But you have to jump through hoops to play Gmod 9 online now.)

Gmod 10 is well worth the $10. It will run about as well as any other Source 2007 game (Episode 2, Portal, TF2, L4D), but depending on how many props you spawn you might get some slowdown. (For example, my 3.2 ghz Celery can't run a skyscraper made out of red shipping crates at more than 4 FPS, even though all the crates and everything inside are frozen.)

Either way, get the Phoenix model pack. It's full of plates, boxes, bars, and general construction parts to make your contraptions not look like they were made by Mr. Wizard.

I used to love gmod, and I had a crapload of addons. But it's only good in multi-hour sessions, something I don't have time for anymore. I bought the Source Premier Pack which has a lot of games and it's great.

Ironically, the games ran better on my old All-in-Wonder 9800 than they do on my Radeon HD 4670. They run faster, at a higher resolution, and with more stuff on on the newer card, but ANYTHING THAT USES DIRECTX IS GLITCHED! I have screenshots if you want to see. I blame my POS ASRock motherboard. It's a 775DUAL-VSTA, a POS kludge that has an AGP and a PCI-E slot, but neither work well. Basically I had this lovely new 9800 that I didn't want to give up even though it was a generation out of date. And I was too cheap for a new graphics card. This board has been nothing but trouble. It's running my 667MHz DDR2 at 400MHz because it BSODs at full speed. Overall, piece of crap. Don't buy it or its successor.

The Radeon HD 4670 is only $100 and delivers excellent performance. I highly recommend it, as long as your motherboard doesn't say ASRock on it. I can crank up all the settings on Red Alert 3 (not that that means much) and it doesn't lag a bit.

We should start a thread for when any good deals occur so we can alert each other.
