How good is LM2575 TI reg

For stepping 12v down to something between 7-8v?

You can use a 7808 regulator to get 8v.

Use a 7805.
Far more common than the 7808, and you can make it do the same thing (see link).

Where do I wire the ground to in this diagram, the negative battery terminal?
