slider or joystick?

should i keep the rubber overmolded joysticks from the PS2 controller, or should i do some textured, low profile, slider pad thingy?

i'm worried about the joysticks getting broken, as i will mostly be using the PS2P during my free time in class, and it will be transported in my backpack a lot. but i like the joysticks rubber grip and ease of use
