NES>SNES controller hacking?

Will an NES controller work on an SNES console by swapping the connectors on the end? If so, is there some way to switch around the buttons so it works properly on Super Mario All-Stars (B>Y and A>B)?

Quick answer: Yes.

Long answer: Yes. But its not as simple as just swapping the plugs. And the SNES has four more buttons than the NES does. So... You wont have full use of the controller. However, that means you can map out the A and B on the NES controller to mean anything on the SNES. Hell, you could probably get the same button to have two or more funtions, but that begs the question "Why?". You just have to change how the wires hook up.

If you want more buttons, then it gets more difficult, and then you start getting into adding more buttons (Drilling in the case and having it look good), chips (Small pins...close together. Nightmare if you don't know what your doing.), and other stuff like that. THEN you have to make it all fit in the NES controller housing. Just overall not fun stuff for a beginner. Great way to learn, though, I expect.

Thanks for the quick reply. All I need are the two buttons for Super Mario All-Stars, and come to think of it I should probably have them map to B and A for the Super Game Boy too.

Actually, I think I read somewhere it would work with swapping the connectors. But if you're going to do that, you might as well just hack up a NES controller to contain two 4021
