Sorry, i couldn't find a good subforum for this kind of question
I'm thinking of building a portable.
I just have some questions.
-What's the best console to start with? (I live in Sweden, so PAL consoles would be good)
-About how much does a portable cost to build?
-What kind of plastic is the best? (I might build a vacuum table from this guide)
Well, basically the same skills are needed no matter what it is your modding. You need to be able to solder, wire things together, glue things, etc. An oldskool cartridge-based console would probably be a little easier because you don't have to worry about all the disc stuff, just a cartridge slot.
Price really varies. It may cost you $10, or it may cost you $150 (usd). It all just depends on what you're willing to spend, and how much you find your parts for.
Current projects:
Ultimate N64 Guide
N64 Portable (x2)
NES Portable
Generally the older consoles are easier. Go with a nes or snes. Don't ever start with N64 or above. Some have done them on their first try but it is not recommended.

It is not junk! It is assorted goods with no current use.
-Project Failure
You need to know how to soldier, and how to hot glue.
Best plastic is, well, sheet plastic for vac forming, perspex for a good-looking cheap fix and,
drumroll....................................... franken-casing!
This can look quite good if you bondo+epoxy+sand a lot+ paint multiple coats. You'll get something cool like the darth 64 or dream trooper!
Again, digging up old threads. EricBradford only posted once, presumably left, so why post a reply months later when he obviously won't be about to read it / do a portable?

There are no plug-n-play PS1 systems. Ask in the right forum. Actually, don't ask at all. Go to the NES subforum and read every thread from the first 5 pages, and THEN ask.
It may seem like a lot, but it's the only way to learn.

The best portable to build is the one you want. You'll work harder at it, enjoy it more, and it will be worth more to you.
Remember: Most people who tell you to do a noac or a snes don't realize that you dont want to build a portable for experience, you want to build it for the portable itself. We have enough information here to help you along with just about any system. So have at it!
Oh, and personally, I have worked with just about everything from nes to wii, and not just nintendo consoles, and I have to say the n64 is best to start with.

best answer I've read for that question! except for the N64 part. Others are easier.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
