N64- USB Mod

Post by zibar »

I have successfuly completed a mod for my NES, SEGA, SNES controller. Using an old keyboard for all three i soldered at the pcbs and they work.

However the n64 controller is leaving me stumpped i am having difficutly with the Digital stick, its similar to your average usb or serial track ball mouse however i have yet to find a emulator that would support a mouse to be the digital stick is there any way i can map the digital stick to the arrow keys on the pcb of the keyboard as i have done so with my previous projects.

This controller is only for testing purposes and is not for the intent of using illegal roms as i am in posetion of the origional games.

Use a 3rd party controller.
They use normal pot joysticks instead of crazy optical ones.

the problem with that is i want to simulate the n64 experience as you can only play n64 games on its origional controler not a mock one.
thanks tho

Project64 works with a mouse as stick with one of the stock plugins- can't remember which one.

Really!! i will check it out thanks for the info!
logically would you think of a better way or a more efficant way to make this mod as i would need to use not only a keyboard but a mouse and a usb hub as having 2 cords comming out of the controller would look retarded.

One of these spiffy keyboard encoders would be just the ticket, but it would run you about $80.

thats the opposite of what i need i think i check out pj64 later tonight when i get home from work and ill see if it supports the mouse as the digital stick.
It will be fun fitting a pcb of both a mouse and a keyboard with a usb hub. besides i need to find a usb trackball mouse do such things exist

It wouldnt really do what i want cause its a track ball pcb i need a mouse pcb i really with the n64 used the same analog stick as the game cube i might just scrap the project and mod a game cube controller.

Basically i want to make the N64 to work on my computer via usb however it isnt as simple as the previous consoles as the digital stick is causing me some confusion as i am new to circutry and am a noob. :P

i have no degree or any sort of education regarding this however i am relying on logic and my ability to implment. Now it has worked for the simple controlers with a D-pad however thoes with analogue sticks are proving to be difficult for me to understand.

You said you were using a hacked up keyboard above I think. If this is the case then you will never be able to get a N64 controller to work in that setup. The reason is that none of the buttons on a keyboard are analogue. To get an analogue input you'll need to do something like hacking up an old gameport joystick and putting a 3rd party joystick onto where the original joystick was. Attach all the N64 buttons to buttons on the joystick and slap on a gameport to USB adaptor. The whole thing could cost you as little as $10 for an old gameport joystick and an adaptor.
