and if they dont know that kind of basic information (parallel and serial, what Ma is etc) then they shouldnt be jumping headfirst into making portables. thats basic electronic knowledge, the kinda stuff most people learned in elementary school science classes it shouldnt be our responsibility to spoonfeed every noob that wanders along! sure basic questions like "how do i find out how long will a system drawing 500ma run on batteries through a 80% efficient regulator" or "can you tell me where to find info on how to LED mod a psone screen"" i am fine with answering but "OMG HOW DO I HOOK DIS BATTERY TO MY N64!!1" is crap

But people ask anyway.

You can either female of the dog species about it like you're basically doing, and tell them to google it, or you tell them to look at the sticky. (But there isn't one yet!)

There aren't stickies for this, and they are common questions from n00bs.
This is not only a site for experienced modders, it's also the starting point for many people into electronics in general.
You say that people like this shouldn't be "jumping headfirst into making portables," but why not? There is no better way to learn than by doing. Many of the great modders on this site came from humble beginnings, and they started right here.

I think it's possible to start with no experience, and I think all of the information necessary should be available on this site.

I agree with you. This stuff should be in stickies. Batteries were a bit of an issue for me at first (And still are in some ways), and it would have made my life a lot easier if I had a sticky, rather than asking random people hoping they had an answer for me.

And also...I jumped right into this. Granted, its cost me money. And I need to completely restart one portable, and by the time I get the money to finished the other, I'll need to do work on it because it's just been sitting around for so long. But that being said, these forums should be better fit to supporting everybody. Not just people who have godskill in soldering. But also the people who cant tell which side of the iron to hold on to.

And rather than female of the dog species about it (As jjhammerstein said), and then later female of the dog species about how these people have no ability... do something about it. You cant give them skill, but you can give them the information - to a point - that they NEED. That's what stickies are for.

Granted I, and other people, have looked through stickies and still missed the piece of information they were looking for. But you can't miss that information if it isn't there to begin with.

there arent any stickies on what Ma is, or what parallel and serial is because its given to be common knowledge, if you dont know stuff THAT BASIC you shouldnt be touching a soldering iron yet. this isnt college level electronics knowledge

You sound like you are slowly drifting into the slot of "Cranky old man who talks about young'uns who have it off too easy these days". I don't see the need for much, but a simple sticky in the Tech Q&A section titled "Battery Sticky: Read before asking about them" with helpful links to some of the relevant threads for each console would not be too bad.

All the people who thought about building a portable but don't want to put a whole lot of work into it are going to complain about lack of information.

The ones that actually want to build them will have absolutely no problem reading the stickies, searching the forum for the rest, and maybe even using google for the rest of the stuff they can't figure out.

It's like most things; you only get a lot out of it, if you put a lot into it.

I hate the "yeah but tell me how to do it" threads newbies make. You know, the ones where they want detailed step-by-step illustrated instructions for complex projects few people have completed (*cough360laptopcough*). [deity] forbid you use your brain and figure out how to do it.
