my plan would be converting the vertical gameboy pocket I have into a horizontal one (like the GBA), overclock it, maybe swap the LED and maybe make it run on different batteries

oh, and adding stereo speakers

I'm in for this contest.

I may revive my Game Gear Overhaul project for this if it's allowed. All I have done so far is take the system apart. I haven't even fixed the blown cap yet.

I would think that as a more casual contest, people could enter stuff they may have done a little work on, but make it clear where they were when the contest started. The voters can always take the time factor into account on their own, anyways.

@themadhacker: Hmmm... GBA is a GBO case, with extra feaures, yet NOT like mine... This sounds interesting,

I have a few idea for prizes, I will have to flesh them out though. Any other prize ideas/donaters?

And Ben, the Benheck Experience thing looks sweet! Can't attend myself, wish I could. We could fold that in, but most of the people here lack the means to attend, so I think an unofficial tie-in would have to suffice. Worth mentioning, but not something to build the show around by a long shot,

Ok, I needed the GBA for a different project. Instead, I will be putting a GBC in a GBO case.

I've been considering stuffing my mp3 player into a NES controller and wiring up the controls and cutting out a hole for the screen. Probably won't have it for this contest but you never know.

Do laptops count? I was just discussing with my friend that I wanted to make my laptop into a giant handheld when I saw this thread. Would that count or not?

I *may* be in, there's a whole bunch of other stuff I want to get done first, but I also have 2.5 weeks off now.

If any of you enjoyed my music at one point in time, expect to see medium quality (Read: bearable) quality revisions.

Also, anyone that could help me file a patent?

Sorry, bit confused - is this compo for modding existing handheld devices, controllers and small gadgets as opposed to portable consoles (ie making a system a handheld)? Just curious - I am too busy with my current Playstation project to divert to do anything else, so can't see I will be entering this compo; but will be looking on this thread with a lot of interest. Had I had time I would have made a GP2x into my existing case (slimmer back) as I intend to so that anyway in the next months, also a GBA into handheld with PSone screen, re-using that old TV out card yet again (also on the cards as the Mini project will be ripped apart and made better).

Compos are good fun and encourage others to mod things. Game on!

Well... The point of this thread is to hammer out the final rules, so it is all still open.

A PSone is really a stretch, but keep in mind that it WAS marketed as a portable system (Well, the LCD bundle was).

If you REALLY think you want to enter it, I suppose it may qualify, but in the spirit of the contest, maybe not...

Hmmmm... How about two categories: One for people who do not entirely meet the rules/started way in advance, for which the only prizes would be bragging rights, and another for all the other stuff, which may/may not have real prizes. Still working on the possible prize, if it comes to fruition, should be VARY C001Z.

Um, you didn't read my post - i'm not entering my system as this compo isn't for a portable console; what I was saying was that as the GP2x and GBA, etc are enterable in this compo (as existing handheld devices), I would have done something along those lines if I had the time, which I don't; but will make anyway in due course.
