I think they are both about the same, just different type companys. I mean, they both repackage software and resell it, microsoft just does a bigger repackage and not as often. You know what I mean?

Speaking of updates, has anybody heard of the new Windows coming out? My friend was blabbing like he knew all about it and he said you had to have at least a 64 bit proccessor to run it

I have no idea where he got that.

You know, that is the sort of thing that bugs me. If you use good Windows software, it's just as stable as Linux. The problem is that Windows has a bunch of crap that no one bothers to rip out of it. There's software like XPlite and 98lite that let you take out a bunch of Windows' "features" and thereby improving stability. If Linux was as cluttered as Windows it'd crash too. (btw: I highly recommend running XPlite or 98lite if you're a Windows user!)
I can't really think of very many features Linux has that Windows doesn't though... I mean, you can run Apache on a Windows machine just fine... but I guess I'm sorta digressing from the point.

Yeah, but linux comes with mysql, php, perl, and apache all pre installed. I'm kinda lazy like that

I just have to give an example of what software has caused a crash on 98; going to the "print" under file in Microsoft Word, and not just once but I did it several times and it didnt work til I rebooted the computer.
On XP (my computer) I dont get a blue screen when the system crashes runnign a DVD! I get a full on reboot of my system. So Microsoft by passed the issue of the user rebooting the computer they have it do it itself. Now when a system cant run a DVD from the menu there is something dreadfully wrong.

I wont argue that Linux and just about any other UNIX-like systems are lacking in areas that Windows is strong in. But as far as mulit-tasking, resource management and security linux is much better. Yes I know that SgtBowHack said that Linux has just as many hole, but keep in mind that patches are issued for those within hours of days, it can take months or over a year before Microsoft gets them out.

Theres an option somewhere that lets you chose between a nice bsod or a reboot when the computer crashes. If you want to stare at a lovely bsod, go to control panel, system, then in there somewhere theres an option. I dont have a windows computer in front of me so Im kinda blind when it comes to the location.

You can also get the windows debugging tools from their website and find out what that bsod means. Odds are that you have a driver that isn't liking the dvd drive. Once you track that down, you should be fine.

I've used 2000 and now XP Pro for the last 3 years now and the only program I have that crashes is Adobe Priemere 6. Considering all the stuff that program has to do (video, constant hard drive access, codecs) I can understand it being flakey. Still doesn't keep me from cursing when it crashes, though.

I can't even recall the last time (if ever) I've had to reboot with XP Pro in order to "unfreeze" the system. Sure, back in the 95/98 days but not so much now.

Though Windows is mega "bloatware" What's the XP Windows folder, like a gig? (Wait- just checked mine 2 GIGS!) I think it's because it includes drivers now for practically anything you can manage to plug into your computer (Even fruit, stick it in and I bet: "Windows Detected New Hardware: Zucchini in USB 2.0 Port")

Anyone remember how 95 could run on 4 megs? (I installed it once on an Acer 386 DX 33 with 4 megs RAM and a 150 meg HD) And if I recall correctly there was a version of 3.1 that could run on 640k! And of course the Atari 800 had an 10k OS and 8k BASIC. Ah, those were the days...

IF COMPUTERS WERE AIRPLANES:

Linux Airlines: All the passengers bring a piece of the plane with them. They all sit on the runway and argue over what type of plane to build. They then break off into 20 groups, build 20 planes (all with the same name) and take off.

AirMicrosoft: The terminal is brand new, the planes are all spotless, and the attendants are attractive and courteous. You settle into your comfortable leather chair and take off. Later, you enjoy a delicious meal with unlimited refills. 20 minutes into the flight, the plane abruptly falls out of the sky with no warning.

United OpenDOS: All the passengers sit on lawn chairs on the runway, flap their arms, and make engine sounds.

Apple Express: They use the same airplanes for 17 years, constantly retrofitting them with new features and appearances.
