caps on consoles

Do you have a technical question that doesn't really fit a specific console? Want some general info on electronics, hacking, making cookies, etc? Here's the place to ask! Go nuts.

caps on consoles

Post by kght22 »

I've noticed how heck has a habbit of taking the caps from various motherboards and setting them on their sides, i am wondering if he has also tried replacing those caps with higher quality smaller caps then placing those on their sides. caps are caps, and the higher the quality the smaller they get, all you need is the same ohms and the same voltage, the amperage only has to be the same or higher.

i appologize in advanced for my poor writing skills.

oh forgot to mention, i also wonder about any other possible component replacements heck might do, its pretty interesting

It's not really necessary. Once they're on their side, they take up a negligible amount of space. You could theoretically replace them, but how much space would you get? Only like 5 cubic centimeters. That's not really useful.

Get what I'm saying?

i get what you mean, but every bit of space in a severely limited environment counts, if you can get a cap thats 1.5cm wide or even smaller to replace a cap thats 2 cm wide, thats still a useable ammount of room inside a little tiny portable, or even inside a larger laptop. possibly not noticable on its own, but added up it can be quite a bit of usable space

i also wonder if ben has tried straight out component replacement on segments of circuitry especialy on older consoles that only use a 2 layer board, although i have seen on his stuff things that are borderline, even on his atari boards i havnt seen him cut the board at a critical point, then wire it back togather in another positon (on an atari it would be relively easy to cut the board in half and fold it back in on itself then wire the tracers back togather) now thats not to say it would be easy (a nightmare no less) but possible. i only mention this because back during the early pentium days a co-worker of mine did something dumb as hell and snaped an expensive motherboard right next to the sockett, as i said dumb as hell seeing as how he had to sit on the damn thing sitting in the box to do it. it was a customer's board and we sure as hell didnt want to pay for that, he was an electrician (monitor repair primarily) but he managed to wire the motherboard back togather with apparently all the tracers in tact because 2 years later i worked on that computer, and it wasnt a hardware problem even with the big gap in the mb.

but anyway, my main point is, i wonder how far he goes in modifying the actual component level of these units, all i've been able to see is what is in his projects list, and have only checked out the website for a couple of weeks (awesome), and i'm also wondering if he has ever thought to replace the cheap parts that many manufactured electronics use with higher quality custom components. i also wonder if he has tried replacing components with bare bones hardly able to do the job components, just to save space (not implying this as a bad thing, i think it would be excellent to see just how far you can go without any real problems, and i didnt say cheap components, i just said hardly able to do the job)

and when i say component level i'm not talking about controller's or their buttons, or plugs and crap like that, i'm talking transisters, resisters, capacitor, and other replaceable parts (memory and cpus are not hardly replaceable in most cases, and that includes obvious cache units on older stuff) anyway i find what i'm trying to explain difficult because i myself know little about electronics (i repair pcs, i dont make motherboards lol) regardless just curious

and once again i appologize for my spelling, and this time i feel i should apologize for asking about him cutting the board and rewiring it (without using allready existing contact points) because i know he's done it before, but i havnt seen one thing where he cut the board at a critical point (for example right across the main buss) and make a single sided board double sided

anyway he does excelent work, i'd love to see him make a desktop laptop =P

EDIT: i may have that info about caps off, i just cant remember if amperage even entered into it, i know it has to be the same ohms, but i dont know about the voltage, pretty sure it has to be the same voltage though

Holy crap, you type so much, and didn't really say much. XD

There are things that are irreplaceable on the mobo that are higher than the caps, so the caps only need to be shorter than those higher things.

Also, people have cut down entire NESs to just the chips and rewired them.

just because there are things taller than the caps that cant be removed, doesnt mean the space of smaller caps cant be used, it just means that the total thickness of the object has to be atleast thick enough to accomodate the items that cant be removed, that still leaves room for more inovation on the inside

and i must thank you guys for being nice to me and my foolish mind, i've just been curious about how far he goes in moding these devices (i also wonder if he shows how far he can go publicly)

Since all of the caps are so far apart, you wouldn't gain any useful space buy shrinking them.

Unless you wanted to run it on AAAs or something.
50 of them.
