DMG questions.

Post by _Ivan_ »

As part of my WIP I want to both overclock and underclock my good ol' brick. While looking at the sticky for overclocking the GBA, I took notice of this picture:
Image

That's fine and dandy for adding a single crystal, but it leaves me confused as to how a third would fit in. I understand that both crystals need to be connected each to one lead of the switch, but why are they connected to each other, and how would a third fit into the mix? Could anyone be bothered to draw up a diagram for me? (And what is the third lead on the switch for?)

The next part of my mod ventures into LEDs. I want extra LEDs near the cartridge slot and I don't know where/how I need to wire/solder them. I realize that I'm probably going to have to do some hack'n'slashing to the case to make this work, and I'm okay with that. Again, if anyone could draw me up a diagram for this or even just explain it to me, I'd really appreciate it. If it helps, I'd like to only put in only three-ish LEDs at max: I don't want my Gameboy's brilliant effulgence to blind or distract its audience... ...too much. ;)

Thanks in advance. :)

P.S. Please correct me if the term I'm looking for in the first paragraph isn't "lead."

the switch he used is spsd single pole double throw and its third lead is on for something else its lead pinout goes like this (on) (ground) (on) if he had soldered something to the third lead, it would be on when the switch was switched the other way.

btw underclocking sucks on a gb there is no point in doing it.

Underclocking + Tetris and/or Kirby Star Stacker = high scores. Plus, I want my Gameboy to have as much stuff as it can.

does anyone even play those games anymore? even so, just get a gameboy color and do it, it has a waaaaaaaaaaaay better screen, you could probably pm themadhacker about that, he has overclocked a couple gameboy colors....
you may want to look into doing the frontlit screen mod palmertech did it I think there is a thread in here somewhere about it....

Hi Ivan,

For reasons I cannot explain, the Gameboy seems to just use the Crystal Oscillator with the highest Hz.

What this means is, you could wire 5 Crystals directly to the original, and it will just use the highest hz one.

It should be fairly simple to wire up 3 Crystals using switches. Try and find a switch that can accept 3 different states.

I have an 8hz on my GBA and it is utter madness. SF2 Turbo Revival now becomes SF2 Utter Madness!

Also, I cannot imagine anyone playing the original Gameboy Pokemon's without an 8hz speedup!

Edit: I just wanted to add, this was probably the easiest mod I have ever done. I didn't even use a switch, I just soldered the new crystal to the older one directly, no probs.
I am a case modder trying to be a portablizer. Will get there one day. :)

I thought that was how crystals worked? The fastest one is the winner

eurddrue: I've seen his lighting mod and plan on doing some sort of lighting mod eventually. As for your previous statements, I still play those games and I prefer the original gameboy to the GBC. I understand that the GBC is better specs wise, but I've always had a dislike for it.

tysonDS: Indeed, I do intend to use a 3-way switch to switch between the crystals when I perform the mod.

Thanks for the responses, but--and I don't mean to come off as a jerk--no one's really answered my questions.

eh? should work, yes I know it is crap, but you guys can tell me anyway.

that^ way it will either be overclocked or underclocked all of the time though, try these boots out for size!

I have no idea if this will work or not, will someone who knows tell me? or _Ivan_ could just test it
