Custom playstation complete!

Ok, actually, this was my first ever mod. I made this quite a while back, but was too lazy to post it. I thought the Playstation was a great system, but today it looks old, gray, and dated. Well, I decided to change that. First, I replaced the green LED with a red one. Then I cut two curved holes in the top of the CD lid, so you can see the disk spinning. Lastly, I painted the case a nice flat black. Here are pics!



The system is actually on in the next picture, but you can't szee the LED light up.



BTW: this is not painted with krylon or any other plastics paint. I used plain flat black spraypaint. Comments?

EDIT: sorry the system is very dusty, because the last time I cleaned my room was several months ago.

That's pretty interesting. I like it. Do you plan to do any more, like customize the power buttons, or is it a finished work?


I'd strongly suggest getting some clear plastic to fill in those lid holes. Otherwise, a lot of dust can get in there, and you'll have to clean your laser more frequently.

Thanks for the comment! I won't be painting the power buttons, because I thought it looked nice with the black body and white buttons and controller ports. In the future I might put plaxiglass over the holes though.

Looks great, though. Very nice job. If you want a better black/white contrast, you might actually want to paint the buttons and such...white. The light gray works, but its not the same. Up to you.

No, it's not. It's about eighty times harder, and is an absolute b!tch to cut unless you have access to a cutting table. It's also about eight times the price of plexi. Great for windows that people are shooting hockey pucks through, but such a pain to work with.

I'll admit that Lexan is more expensive. But its also stronger, easier to form with heat (It's a dream to vacform/blow mold/rotocast), and holds up through brutal usage. And I stand by what I said; Easier to use. I use it all the time, and have used it for more than eight years. Maybe its easier for me because of that...*shrug*.

Well, I've been working with it for 20 years, and for portable making, it's not worth the price. Stick with regular plexi or styrene for vacuum forming. It's higher impact strength is fairly worthless in casework, as when you drop it, the lexan will be fine but the electronics can break loose and smash themselves to bits against the lexan.

Plasticard (known as Styrene in the USA, or Polystyrene) is tough. I am using 2mm (0.080") on my cases, although after the vacuum forming the walls are more like about 1mm or just under, they are very rigid and strong, surprisingly so. Good material, easy to vacuum form and easy to spray paint.
