I'm sure you could get money from it. if it isn't fake of course
Go away. No seriously, Leave. If you think something is fake, when I provided a video and pictures then your not allowed to be here. Get out. Shoe. *Sprays with water*.

Kids these days.

On a more serious note, my hearts in my throat. Im nervous. I dont even know if I'll get cash. (They could just give me advice.)

Someone could steal my product, due to it not having a patent. (Like someone in the audience could.)

Although my product is very complicated, someone could still steal it.

This is where I dont know what to do. To go on the show, or to not go on. I could always not go on, and request a private (Non aired) presentation.

SS
SS - Take your point, however HotDog_Cart has a big "fail" in his sig; so I figured if it was legit for him to post a big "fail" in his sig then he couldn't object to someone else to post the word "fail" when he was going into "a path of negative success".

Nice to see you understand where I was coming from.

I have seen this before - someone went on to Dragons Den with a gadget to rock a baby in a pushchair to sleep, didn't take the Dragons offer; came back a year ago with made-version (first time on the program someone came back) and by then someone else had released to market a fairly similar product - as there was no patent initially.

Bottom line is this - if you believe your product will sell bucketloads and can prove to the Dragons that it will, what you do is this - offer the Dragons 40% of your business (zero value at the moment after all) in return for whatever you need to finance the business - work on a basis the following:

patent costs
prototype costs
stock purchase, may have to order in quantity
marketing via website and adverts on Google and other sites
tooling
renting small business unit to be based (ie not at home)
employing someone to help the day to day running of business so you can concentrate on sales and marketing the product and getting it to market
etc

Eg, you might go for something like $50k - $80k from them, or whatever you need to get the business afloat.

You give a Dragon 40% as that still makes you majority and also encourages them to put their time and effort into the project. Be prepared to go 50% - worth it in the circumstances. Your business at the moment is worth nothing, no product, no sales, no revenue, no profit. Bear that in mind. You need their time and contacts.

You choose a Dragon with suitable contacts and fingers in the right pies to help you; ie not the one who made their millions in the pub industry but one who either specialises in start-up businesses or technology or retail.

Think of it this way - forget emotions in business, they are not important; as you will learn.

* Your product is going to be successful - research the market, tell the Dragons about it. Go for broke to get a deal. If they don't support it, go for private finance to get a patent (family, bank, etc).

* No way to raise finance to get product to market - ok, who cares then if someone may copy it - go all out for a Dragon deal - you won't make the product successful if you can't pay for R&D and marketing.

* Unsure if product will sell shed-loads - well, neither will the Dragons either...

In your presentation - no slideshows.

* Make a single board, c. A2 size, with product pics with a big one in the middle.
* Wear a suit - get your hair cut and looking professional and not "student"
* Come across as "switched on" and entreprenurial
* Know competition and market and prices
* Don't overvalue your business or project silly achieveable sales figures
* Tell them how you will advertise your business and sell the product, and routes.
* Be likeable and respectful, they have to want to do business with them
* Research the Dragons themselves - what they back, what they specialize in
* Speak confidently
* Remember, they want to make money out of you and you need their money, so gear yourself into that frame of mind
* Know what it costs to make your product, and sale price. Talk about intending to contact manufacturers in China and India to make your products cheaper.
* Try to relax in presentation, build it up to this major thing and you will screw up as you will forget everything and lose the ability to speak properly!
* Prepare

Have an answer to one of the points they will certainly raise - "VR - every few years someone tries to bring it to market and it always seems to fail" - have an answer for that - why yours is different.

Good luck.

Having a slideshow seems like the only way possible for me to bring my product though. Due, to I'm going to be on a crammed school bus. I cant bring bristol board or anything, also my teacher asked them if I could bring a thumbdrive with a slideshow of my work and they said it was okay.

Im so.. like lost on the slideshow thing. To do one or not to do one.

Yes, do one, but make it just a couple of screens, keep it relevant.

Update: The slideshow is only going to consist of pictures, rather than a business slideshow that consists of words. I got a page of questions that I MUST awnser (It will be what the dragons ask). It says on it that "You will NOT be asking the dragons for money in return for a part of your business. You will be asking them for advice on how to bring it to the next step.". I presume if they really like it, they may contact you or something and try a deal with you.

I watched this show a couple times. Unless you have a revolutionary idea, it's hard to get backing.

Too often I see a person going into the show with some sort of gimmick. And I see where they're coming from, people like that stuff. Well, some people....

If you're trying to seriously get an idea funded it had better be pretty darn revolutionary. Not to mention, these people are looking to make a return on their investments. If I were an investor, I want a product that I know will work, and I know will sell. And most people want a cerain percent of your business. With an idea alone, it's really hard to go anywhere.

I'd assume pretty much without a doubt I don't think they'll take you seriously if you don't have a patent, any experience in business, a product or prototype, or anything else besides a couple of notes and an idea. Now I never read any of these threads fully but you've probably discussed that or have acknowledged that. And if this isin't really serious, don't be so nervous.

Obviously you'll want to be very harsh on yourself regarding what you might think the judges might say. You should really ask yourself every question about your product (or idea really) that you can think of, and if there's one question you don't cringe about being asked, then you might be less stressed. Try to convince yourself as a judge, that your product would sell because of whatever reasons. Make sure you set your idea apart from whats out there, and why it's better. Also, make sure you know the market. You'll need to know competition, how much money is in the industry, and how much of that market you plan to take in.

I would assume this is taking it way more seriously than it's actually going to be, but if you're doing this for real, I'd suggest taking a few years of time to develop your product. If that time of work isin't worth making the product, then it's probably not worth it now either.
I'm not being harsh, I'm just telling you to be very critical of yourself. Make sure you can answer all the questions you can think of, and be sure to make sure they take you seriously, even though you are young.

A couple of times the people on the show have turned down good ideas either because they aren't experienced with a current product or aren't interested. Like one time I saw this woman who made professional suits for women. She had a great business, but the men on the show were reluctant to take up that sort of business. So you may luck out on that idea alone.

Good luck dude. Make us benhecker's proud.

UPDATE: Hey guys. I went today, and I got a small interview by CBC. I was going to get like a 10 minute exclusive interview, but we had to go so I couldnt.

Although, they LOVED my idea. The only problem was that, I'd be going against HUGE companies, but they told me "Be persistant. Dont let a big company push you around. Follow your dreams."

I also got a poster that was signed by all of the dragons. Yay!

:)
