Overclocking limits of the DS lite

Post by Master Kirby »

Have any of you ever tried overclocking the DS lite? Do you know if it can handle being clocked at 2.5X?

I was looking through some old circuit boards to try to find a 32 Mhz oscillator since that is 2X the original 16 Mhz. I found some 24s which should clock it to 1.5X, and a 40, which should take the speed up to 2.5X.

Do you think the 40Mhz oscillator would work, or do you think it could damage something? I have only seen documentation for up to 28Mhz being used before; on the japanese http://nds.jpn.org/ site.

Most likely, it can handle it. It is possible that games with more sensitive timings (Like ones that use real time 3d video on both screens, interlaced), may have trouble.

At the worst, it will not boot, and no harm will be done, just replace the crystal.

I finally got around to overclocking my DS Lite. As it turns out, hte 40 Mhz oscillator was too much. When I attached it to the circuit, it seemed to make things run slower instead of faster. When I turned on the power the DS logo moved onto the screen and the sounds were at a lower frequency.

When I attached the 24Mhz crystal, it worked perfectly, allowing everything to run faster. The smaller size fit real well too.

If you want to know where to attach the wires, read this japanese guide.
