slicing up analog controller

to put the analog sticks on seperate sides of a portable, do you somehow cut in in the middle and wire everything up again, or just cut out the square where the analog sticks are?

desolder the sticks off the motherboard, and then reconnect the sticks to the motherboard with wire.
