first portable build thread EDIT: On hold 'til after X-mas

Ok, as the title states, I have started my first portable. It is using a sj3 and an audiovox portable dvd player screen. What is somewhat different about this, is that it is going to be a "green" portable. Many of the parts are being recycled from somewthing else. I have the case/screen/battery/batttery charger from a portable dvd player with a bad laser. The tact switches are from an old cable box I swiped from somebody's trash, and the buttons are going to be from my snes controller. Also, instead of using perf. board, I have drilled holes in old plastic from an old game system shell. I do not plan on modding the cart slot to use american carts, instead I will use an adaptor.

NOTE: I have not yet wired up stat and select, but will soon. I am hoping to finish this by Thanksgiving.

That's ok. Besides, I like to reuse things that are otherwise useless.

I don't know what the hell happened exactly, but when I was wireing the remaining buttons, I turned on the sj3 to test them, the video went out. Audio works still. Then I turned it off and back on and it worked. I went to move the sj3, and the video broke again. If I fried this, I am abandoning the project because I have no money (or will to resart it).

Check your video wire. If it it loose, the video will not work sometimes. Try re-soldering the wire or replacing it.

Might be that the wires you used are too thin, especially the ones from your battery to the unit.

On my SJ3, something similar happened. The problem was due to a poor (or lack of) soldering job connecting the yellow composite video jack to the SJ3 motherboard.

It was a bad connection. Rewired it and the SJ3 gets video perfectly now.

EDIT: btw, I will not be led modding the screen. Instead, to save power, I will have seperate power supplies for the scren and sj3.

You would be better having both running off the same batteries so the system dies at the same time. If you incorporate more batteries in parallel, that would increase the amperage and playtime.

I have a question. Can the sj3 run off 7.2 volts, because that is the voltage of the dvd player battery.

You don't have to. If you're using a Zenith or a PSOne screen, you can get the 5V you need for the SJ right off the screen.

I am not useing a ps1 screen thuogh. I am using a dvd player screen.

I would be surprised if it didn't have one. It might take a bit of experience to know what they look like, but it's there. Check out the pictures of the PSOne Screen 7805 and go from there. Some tips:

1) It gets hot after being on for a while. Maybe not burning hot, but hot enough to tell.

2) It has three connections: The back is a metal ground, usually the width of the regulator to varying heights. Then an in and an out, occasionally with aground out the front, although it's trimmed on some/most because it's redundant.

3) It's a black square, about 1 cm squared. Look for that.

You should be able to run it off 7.2v fine. In my Mini project, it runs the plug'n'plays on 7.4v - what you are using is plug'n'play. Think I tried the sj3 (didn't like the games on it enough), and I had that running 7.4v
