Legalilty of Modding

Post by boxerorange »

Some of my friends and I were thinking about opening a small modding business and the subject came up of whether or not it would be legal. I have never thought about it before, but always figured modding for yourself is fine, but if you make money off modding other people's consoles is it legal?

Why wouldn't it be? This guy's been doing it for years.

As long as you aren't installing modchips that defeat lockout systems, there shouldn't be a problem. (The ones that enable copied games to be run.)

Adding mod-chips is not legal in almost all countries.

Taking a commercial product and making it work with another is no different that changing a car stereo or hub caps or "pimp your ride". Legal. By exactly the same token, so is what we do; unless you circumvent copy protection measures (which we don't do).
