What System Has The Smallest Mobo?

Atari, SNES, NES, PSone, and to a lesser extent the GameCube and Wii.

The first four are fairly small. Atari 2600 is cut down to a 4x4 inch square. The SNES, NES and PSone motherboards are about 5x8 or smaller. And the bonus with these first four is that their covered in Ben's book.

The GameCube and Wii are a little bigger then the first ones. The Wii is definitely smaller as far as height is concerned. The GameCube is going to have you make a portable that is 2"+ thick. But isn't any larger then it normally is when you look at one for the top.

NOACs, I would say. Even smaller than the Atari board.

It's a pirated system, however.

But it DOES comes with a good 70ish games preloaded.

Which mobo is the thickest and which is the thinest? Also How thick is the PSOne Screen and the Intec screen Mobos?

It does't matter how thick a mobo is. big parts like capacitors can be relocated to make more space.

These are from memory, so they might not be right.

- The Sony PSONE screen is 3/4" thick.
- Intec is a brand, they have several screens we use. The 2.5" Screenpad is 1/2" or 3/4" thick.

If you're going for simple, small, light, easy, , hard to break, and well-documented as far as a first portable, go with the SuperJoy 3 (sometimes III) NOAC.

A search for all of these will yield results using the search function.

Look up G-forces excellent documentation of the SuperJoy 3 in the NES Forum.

I'm sure I dimensioned and posted the dimensions of the PSONE screen before and after the removal of the upper part of the PCB (Also something to search for)

And the guts of the Intec are the same size as the screen, with a smaller, possibly removable board that is equal in width and about 3/4" in height and 1/2" in depth, if memory serves.

PSone screen - mobo is 9mm thick (including the backing components). 10mm with screen on, in total.

As far as thickness goes, if you want thin go with a cartridge system. If you don't mind it ending up a little thick, go with a CD/DVD system. And even then if you package a PSone, PS2 slim, Wii or the like right you can keep them very hand-held. Systems like the Dreamcast or GameCube are going to be trouble though, they have a lot of stacked parts or if you move them you'll have a lot of fine soldering to do to make the connection.

But like anything start simple and work your way up. Ben's a shining example of that.
