So I was wondering about the controls for a Psone portable.
I see some use a Dualshock setup with the D-Pad and two Analog sticks.
Some use a d-pad and one analog stick.
And some just use the d-pad and no analog stick.
Why the differences? Does a Psone Portable need 2 analog sticks, one analog stick or is just a d-pad fine?

There is really no need for the right analog stick in my opinion. The only thing I can think of that actually needs it would be a FPS (which I am not even really sure of.)
So, in my opinion I would say no you don't need the 2nd stick

the left analog is nice to have though.
Thanks for the quick response
What about just the left analog and no d-pad ?

The one with no joysticks was the first release controller. Then came the joysticks, and game producers were perswaded to program their games to use them.
The second joystick is used in some games (eg Ape Escape) to cycle your inventory, and another game (can't think its name) to move camera angles, etc). One of those features you could lose the 2nd joystick and be fine although a handful of games wouldn't work as a result.

like someone ( i cant remember who ) said, analog sticks are useful for shooting games like medal of honor for aiming and stuff, but thats the only thing i use them for since i find analog sticks clumsy.
Some use just a D-Pad and the X, O, etc buttons becuase it saves space
The riht analog stick merely represents X, O, triangle and square, otherwise it isnt really needed.... but some games they are programmed for different things.....
And the left analog stick is for movement... unless its programmed otherwise....
You can scrap the analog sticks, but with some games, they are easier and needed.....
And you really shouldnt scrap the D-Pad unless you connect the analog stick to where it is supposed to go somehow....
The only reason whay i kept the D-Pad is because of crash 1, which is the game i play most on my PS1.....
whihc doesnt use a analog stick...
but if it is on the PSP, its easier with the d-pad....
oh, and just so you know, 'Dualshock' controllers are the controllers with vibration, and not all dualshock controllers are analog, like one of my friends has..... except i think he built it himself.....
