GC DVD Drive question

Post by 64M320N3 »

Well, I took apart my gamecube a while ago and you guys are right that thing is downright huge!!! :(
I've seen that you can slim it down significantly and stuff, but i don't think that has done justice to anyone around here.
So here is my question:
Since the GC drive is just a DVD drive that is made so you can't fit in DVDs (it can play them w/ a modchip and a slightly bigger case) can't you just replace it with a regular DVD drive, like in a portable DVD player so it would be a lot thinner? :?
I don't think anybody has tried this... but I do think it would be a lot of help. Any Ideas?

The drive control electronics vary between different types of DVD drives. The probability of finding one with fully compatible electronics would be very minimal.

Thanks guys.
Now that Blu Ray is out DVDs players are a lot cheaper.
I got one right now that I'm intending to rip apart.
*Sigh* this is going to be a pain.
Sorry for the noobish question, i just hate that damn dvd drive, it's like 3 cm thick. :P
Not portable friendly.

I think it can be done... refer to the IDE/USB thread. One of my more recent posts talks about it. Dunno exactly how it works, but I know it's possible with Destop's interface.

Your best bet is to use the GC dvd drive controller, and transplant that into a smaller dvd drive. Unlikely the laser pitch/position control will match up, so you may end up having to build a go-between to handle that difference.

I am working on moving a gamecube drive into the remains of a PSP UMD drive, I will let you know how it goes as I progress (Or not!)
