I played one of these in canada. I completely forgot about them untill you brought it up.palmertech wrote:Valium wrote:It wasn't a clone, it emulated N64 games.![]()
No, it did not emulate them. Not by a long shot. Basically, the Chinese were too cheap to buy games for the N64, so near the end of its lifespan, Nintendo released the iQue. It was essentially an N64 redesigned to use rewritable flash memory that you could buy $8-10 games for from download kiosks. Not worth getting, they can only play those games, and they are all in chinese anyway. In theory, you could make one play N64 carts... But the knowledge and time required would be IMMENSE, and of too little value for someone to attempt.
And there IS an N64 clone! Nintendo made a special N64 for hotels to use as a pay-per-play system. The entire thing fit in a near standard sized N64 controller, and had no cart slot. Instead, the games were loaded onto it from a central point remotely when you "rented" it for a certain number of hours. The system is fairly unknown, not even a wikipedia page!
I am currently trying to find someplace where I can buy one of these systems to mess around with. Will be hard to do, considering they are supposed to be returned to Nintendo at the end of the lease.

The iQue is not an FPGA, it was indeed a whole new system with a different storage system.
The hotel thing, like I said before, loads games from a central server. The game is run on the controller hardware, however. I talked to a hotel manager about it, he knew hardly anything, but I got at least a little bit of info.
I wonder if it is at all possible to make a clone of the network system? If it is a well known standard, it may make building an N64p with a bunch of built in games feasible!
Last hotel I stayed at, it was secured right into the wall, so you would have to cut the cable. I forgot to check if it had tamper proof screws (Or screws at all!). I am a man on a mission, a mission to take one of these things apart and get some pics. Then, try to persuade the hotel to let me make copys of the documentation.
In theory, these things could really shake up the N64 scene. I think it is very possible that most of the N64 is in the controller. Think how small the DS Lite mobo is.
