a R4 has 2 clones that i know of. the M5, and the N5, if tehres any more to it, post below.

The R4 is about $80 AU

My friend got a M5 for christmas from his aunt from bali, and it was about $25 AU, so the clones are expancianally cheaper, but with any of them, to make the SD cards work in it, you need to put the system files in it. it can even play music, and i know that you can download GBA games to put in it, but i dont kknow if that works yet, i havent tried yet.....

But your best choice is an R4 or a clone...

Your best bet is NOT an R4 or clone. They are overpriced, outdated pieces of junk that only newbs buy. Why? Because for some reason, people keep saying they are great. You can get a TTDS with FAR better features for less than $12 including shipping!

The R4 can play game roms, you can save games straight onto it, you can listen to music on ur DS with it, you can change the themes on it, and you can get more micro SD cards if one gets full ( like mine, ive got 2 2gb ones, and a 1gb one with all my games on them, and one of the 2gb ones are full, and the 1gb is full. and most of the other 2gb one is full.... )

So, if someone exlplains why the R4 or a clone is worse than another one, ill stop telling how good it is.... ok?

Oh yer, the R4 has a system firmware updates, which gives support for some more games....

Well, the R4 isn't in production anymore, and hasn't gotten any updates to the firmware in half a year. That's one of the main reasons there are better cards out there.

Personally I think that the Cyclo DS Evolution is the best slot-1 device. It has a great support team, and the forums for it are quite good. The only downside is the price, but the build quality makes up for that.

Just my two cents.

YES FINALLY.

I was waiting for someone to post some intelligent anti-R4 stuff before I made my comment.

I bought an R4 back in 2006 when it was new.
I replaced it with a cheaper better card about a year after.
I've since had about 8 different DS flashcarts.

It's wonderful how cheap AWESOME cards are now.
iTouchDS, ~$20.
TTDS, $9 SHIPPED.

Gotta love it.

But seriously, nobody should have bought an R4 or any of the dozen or so clones any time after Mid-07'.

Also, the R4, has a LOT of clones.

I did not respond till now because by the time I had seen your post, it was an ancient thread. Courtesy of old post bumping, I will now reply.

The R4 is badly made, has cheap contacts, has an unreliable microsd slot, and has SLOW, SLOW, SLOW bandwidth on the SD card line. ANy games that try to stream decent looking videos from the cart completely freeze up/lag.

Other cards lack these problems, and add SDHC support, better ebook reading, auto-dldi patch, better support for 3rd party GBA addons, actually get firmware updates, and most importanly, work with new games!

Almost ALL cards out there, even low end ones, have near 100% compatibilty. The R4 lack support for all the new games that are coming out with copy protection, such as Chrono Trigger DS (Which BTW, I have a legal, purchased, pre-ordered copy of).

The R4 is a terrible card compared to modern offerings, it lived a good life, but it is time to just let it die.

No actually, my R4 has SDHC support, and i use the YS Menu for it, works the same, and has support for expansion packs and crap...

But i dont need any of that any more, because i have the new DSi, which i can boot roms straight off the SD card without any formatting, and can play gba roms from the card because the DSi has more ram to support the GBA roms.

It may support expansion packs, but I am talking about SPECIAL things that only work for certain games, like motion sensors, or the star styler, or the magslide, or that face training.

If your R4 has SDHC, then it is not real, it is a fake, newer card. The real R4 lacks support for anything over 4gb (And only 4gb cards that do not comply with the SD standard, and SHOULD be SDHC).

Also, as far as I know, the DSi does not support any kind of hack for running DS games off the SD card, and GBA roms? I thought the DSi had the same amount of RAM? I think you are flat-out lying, as the DSi is NOT FAST ENOUGH to run GBA games vie emulation. To me, you sound like one of those stupid people who speculate on something they have no idea what they are talking about, then claim they have done it.

EDIT: Ah, it does have more RAM. You are still lying, though.
DISCLAIMER: Please, prove me wrong. I have not done more than 5 minutes of research on the DSi, so I may have missed something. But I doubt it.

Lol, more than anything, actually.

The DSi can't play games off of it's SD slot, I can assure you of that, and if BoomBox tries to defend his claim, I vote for a good clean lynching.

I don't recall at the moment if the DSi has more RAM or not, but I can assure you, it can't play GBA games.

It has double the RAM, as far as I can figure. 10 whole megabytes!

The funny thing about boombox is that unlike other liers, who instantly disappear, he will actually hang around for a post or two, until he is completely the PWNZRD. THen he leaves, and pretends the thread never happened.

I believe this is about to happen now.

Well, not to defend the R4 or anything (technically I am, but whatever), but I bought an R4 last year around christmas time, an original R4 mind you, and to be honest it has no problems doing the majority of what you said were problems.

My R4 has very nice contacts, look quite good to me.
I've never had a problem with the MicroSD slot
Has never frozen, even during the rather large cut scenes in FF12 rev wings
Once I updated the firmware on it to the latest released one (back in 07, actually) it had no problem running games, not even Chrono Trigger, I'd be playing it right now, but I've beaten it too many times to play it again right now. Probably in a few days or something, just to see the differences in the remake.

Hate to disagree with you, I agree that it's a bad card and everything, but I haven't run into any of the problems you mentioned.

Interesting...

I had done a lot of research on the R4 a while back, , and there were a lot of people who disliked these aspects. I know for a fact they changed from the unreliable spring mechanism to a friction based card slot later in its production.

Have you tried the castlevania 4 intro/cutscenes?

Crazy lag there, even with a fast Japanese Kingston MicroSD.

It will boot chrono trigger, but the copy protection makes the first time warp last forever.

There are cracks, but not for the R4, afaik (They are implemented as cheats).

My friends R4 contacts have "liney" discolorations, maybe they got better traces. Do you have a genuine first party nintendo game to compare with? Note that this is not a problem unless you get it wet and it may corrode more easily, but still worth noting.

And hey, if it gets the job done, and you have one, great! But to say someone should buy one now, with newer ones for only $10 shipped, is pretty strange. (Not you, pointing at certain others).
