"Video Game Glasses" - Need Help Modding

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

Absolutely; especially when talking about goggles and helmet - you have to worry about motherboards that are flat and not curved and not small enough, as well as weight and comfort. A different proposition to the work we normally do here.

Yup just on one eye, going to require some getting use - time to master keeping one eye closed before hand

just looked at the specs on those. 640x480 is really good for those. most are lower than that.

Also, there's 2 screens so you could just use one side instead of needing the whole thing. You could mount the motherboard and battery somewhere else on the mask (like forehead or next to the air-breathermabob) and just stick the screen in front off the eye. You could put the on/off switch anywhere.

And you said you wanted it on a rail system? like, so that you could move it into position once you turn it on? It would be a million times easier if it could stay stationary.

On, one eye? Not worth it. I'll explain. Want to know, how I know? I have a few pairs of these, as I was once partnered with "i-glasses" made by i-o displays.

The way these work, is that both eyes see a slightly different image. Which then becomes one whole image. Just like how 3-D goggle work.

Now, try this: Put these on your face, and then close one eye and try to use these. You'll still see an image and it will look fine, but some parts will be actually "off". Like depth, color, tint, etc. Also, if you cover 1 eye for too long, you'll get a massive headache due to your eye trying to strain to see the image in focus. (Both screens need to be looked at, for your eyes to "focus" onto them. Like, when you cover your eye, the current screen will become slightly blurry. Your eye will try to focus to get rid of the blurryness.)

Heck, even using these for like 30 minutes with BOTH eyes, cause headaches when first using these. You have to let your eyes get used to them.

I used one of these once, watched a movie while my braces were put on. I can tell you from experience that you only need one eye. How do I know? I have a lazy eye, so my eyes don't work together to produce a 3D image. I see out of both eyes all the time, but the eye that isn't "in use" is comparable to the corner of your eye. I can swap the "in use" eye at will, I even do it automatically if my dominant eye is blocked. I can't see 3D, either in daily life (no depth perception) or at a movie. So I conclude that at least with the pair I used, only one eye is needed.

Seems I've opened up a can of worms - the gas mask is currently being made by someone else and we're thinking of designing it on a 'plague doctors mask' thus they'll be lots of room in the hollow 'break'.

Anybody willing to help me out then?

Ive made a few night vision scopes for my air rifle, pretty simple but cost is a huge factor.

First, if your wanting to use LCD screens and a low lux camera with IR led's, your beaten on these things by size. You would need a massive array of cheap IR led's to even see a few feet(not to mention battery power), trust me ive tried it. You could use an IR laser, but these things(proper ones) cost upwards of £100.

Personally, if I were you id get rid of the glasses and buy youself a cheap image intensifier off ebay. Miles more effective, cheaper and will take up less room.

btw, if you definitely need to proceed with this, this is the camera i used on one, very good because its ready for night vision right out of the box. No need to remove or add filters etc.

techknott thanks for all the info, i'll look into image intensifier tubes as I know nothing on that subject - do I just look down the thing? no clue.

The camera I've got arriving (which is taking a century to arrive from China) already has night vision capabilities and is hardwired with some IR LEDs but I do believe I'm going to maybe triple its native number.

I'm not looking for the ability to see a million miles, just give me in advantage out in the woods, so I don't go tripping over any roots or have any more branches swipe at my face - I do pretty well with my native nightsight

My mini night vision camera arrived in the post today so obviously I've gotta give you guys some photos;

As you can see it comes with a plug for using it for inside surveillance.

Here it is out the box, next to a UK penny for size reference - connects to a 9volt battery.

Here's a close up with its four infra-red LEDs - need around twelve to be effective.

All in all; £7 bought & delivered (thanks to Ebay)

To be honest anotherperson I don't have enough knowledge to say if they're stereoscopic or not - lack of instructions doesn't help, but presumably the specs are online somewhere

Do you already have a NVG in hand and know how to mod it to composite out? If you're wanting a cheap alternative look up CVS Pharmacy disposible digital camera night vision mod. These can be purchased at any CVS pharmacy store or on the website for about $30 and easily modded by removing the IR filter lens and soldering in some IR LEDs for illumination. Then just figure out how to solder in your composite video out.

Not made any further progress on this for a while, been moving house and restarting uni so getting side tracked.

I'm also ditching the 'on rails' design and sticking more with an eyepatch idea, just pull it on over the mask, flick a toggle switch and away we go.

Not sure how well that would work in outside situations, but inside that would work great. You would need a really intense IR LED to be outside for it to work good.
