Slim CD tray and other PSone questions, including controller

Sorry if this has been covered before, if it has, please let me have the details. Did a quick search and didn't find anything definitive.

Few questions here:

PSone:

Can I swap out the CD drive in the PSone for a slimline CD drive, like used on a laptop? If I can, what do I connect to what, or what type of drive do I need? (run off stock 7.5v). Slimmer the better, of course.

Controller:

I haven't played many PSone games yet, although I have a large collection of them. I notice that some games/menus require the d-pad, although some of the games I played are happy to work with d-pad or the left joystick equally.

Do you need the left joystick or can you play happily with just the d-pad? What games suck with just using a d-pad on the PSone?

What games is the right joystick for, and what is it normally used for? Can you easily do without it or would you miss it??(space is restricted, so relevant to ask).

Project:

If I can use a slimline CD drive instead of the stock PSone drive, that will save space, and might mean I can squeeze the PSone screen mobo there. If the CD can eject out of the system, that means the screen can probably be integrated into the existing drive bay door and leave enough space for the controls on the original PSone case front. This might mean, in principle, that a PSone portable might be made to fit into a PSone casing maybe, as long as it is slightly thicker (and also batteries sticking out the back a bit).

Hey, I haven't spent much time on this yet, or opened up one of my PSone consoles to poke about; thought I would gauge comments from you guys that have; and also those that played a lot of PSone games!

Drive electronics vary greatly between models, so unless you get really lucky, no you can't retrofit a slim drive to the PSOne. Slim drives are only useful on the XBox for now (as it uses IDE).

A fair bit of the Playstation's life was spent without analog control on the regular controllers, so most games don't need the analog sticks, and many can't use them, as you've found out. There are a handful of games that take advantage the analog sticks, that monkey catching game, at least one football game, and it's been too long since I've dealt with Playstation... The Emulation on PSP uses the analog on it to simulate L2 and R2 instead, so I'd say it's safe to drop them.

Keep the analog sticks, it's not like the 64's digital pad, a lot of good games use them.

no. you use both analog sticks, and they also act as buttons.
