Advertised as 720p, but 1080p?! Wha?

Hey guys, I bought a new 15.6 inch Insignia 1080p LCD TV (widescreen 16:9) for $200 at Bestbuy a few days ago. I love this TV as it has component, HDMI, and VGA inputs. Yay! Sure its small, but Im sitting 2 ft away from it, so it doesnt matter.

One thing I dont get is, the box says its only 720p but the TV tells me its in 1080p mode. Why is this? Why would a company advertise their product as less? (And I know its actually in 1080p, as the graphics are way better than when it runs in 720p)

Also, I put this in here as its a "semi" portable size HDLCD. Feel free to move it to technical forum, if you want.

It's most likely being upscaled to 1080i.

But interlace flickers. I dont see any flicker at all. The TV also tells me 1080p, not 1080i. I even set my PS3 on output 1080p ONLY, and it tells me 1080p.

Could just be a mistake, big companies make them too. There's no other real explanation as to why.

A lot of screens can downconvert a 1080p signal to it's native resolution.

That being said there are a few 15.4" screens that are native 1900x1200 so they are capable of easily displaying 1920x1080 (or 1080p).

But every 15.6" Lcd Hdtv I have seen are natively 1360x768 which makes them capable of 720p natively. And all of them are 1080p compatible meaning they can accept a 1080p signal and downconvert it to the screens native resolution. But they will display the signal being received which would be 1080p.
