"Video Game Glasses" - Need Help Modding

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

"Video Game Glasses" - Need Help Modding

Post by Lord_Turkey »

I just received a pair of "Private Viewer GX-380" video game glasses from Ebay for a project.

Image

They're not quite what I expected but they work well enough but I require them modding for another project, and I do not wish to botch it by attempting it myself so am requesting some help.

I'm willing to pay all expenses, costs, materials, postage etc and am capable of doing so - I don't have a strict deadline either, could take months and I don't care as I don't need them urgently

If anybody's interesting or willing them please get in touch.

I am looking on e-bay for a VR headset to play with, have a couple of ideas, but not sure if feasible until I get it (if I win the auction).

What do you want to achieve? What are the specs of the glasses - presumably composite input only and stereo audio?

I am UK, as are you, that is one advantage.

Feel free to PM me with your thoughts (and/or on this thread); what you want to end up with, etc. Depends on what you want to achieve as to if I can help or not.

One logical thought might be a gutted out plug'n'play system with a few systems inside (2, 3 or 4), switchable, built in batteries, controls, etc, so you can play your system on the same unit and link the video and audio via one cable (4 wires) to the VR headset.

As you are new to this site, you may not know what I can do; have a look on my website if you are interested.

Two more completely different projects done, not on the site yet, or here (will do so on Monday when I get a chance and post in the News section)... What I will say in the interim is one mod involves a NES controller, gutted to fit what is inside now; and a unique mod (so far) to a normal plug'n'play system.

They run at both 60hz and 50hz which is surprising.

They run off a USB which plugs into a regular plug plugged into the mains, this then runs to a small 'hub' and from there you connect a mini usb - female to male for input signal or output signal and finally a mini usb into the glasses - its a maze of wires.

There's also a small jack for headphones.

Basically I'm intending to make a night vision monocle/eyepatch
to fit inside a seperate project (homemade gas mask) so I'd need them to run on a single eye as I need one 'free eye' for normal vision.
(closing my eye while playing them seems to make no difference to viewing angle thankfully)
without the mass of wires (just connect them to the mini night vision spy camera I've got arriving in the post - which is already wired to composite input and stereo) and with a better battery (the 'hub' thing acts as a battery when its not plugged in)

The screen also dims slightly at certain angles which looks to be a loose connection problem.

Modeled after ED-209 apparently

Ignore the PS3 part, I took these from one of my posts on a different forum

The quality is not as bad as these pictures suggest - blame my phone camera

That looks very easy to mod. The mini-usb from the composite and audio looks easy to mod, and so does the power. Basically, just open up the box, and find where everything hooks up to. I'd love to help you, but you may want to talk to Bacteria, because he is in the UK. (Shipping will be much less)

There's zero instructions in the box, despite the seller telling me otherwise (damn cheek!) Bacteria does seem to be winning, if hes willing and able due to his other good work and geographical convenience although I doubt its like anything hes tried before.

I don't have any knowledge on night vision equipment, etc, so probably not ideal. If you wanted help on video game modding I could have been useful. Never mind!

I do want my PS2 modding at some point, need it turned into a laptop to play games from the hard drive on the move, and watch movies too.

Back to the goggles its still more of a screen mod, the camera just plugs in to the goggles

that's what I was thinking. so bacteria, instead of wiring a screen to a console, you're wiring it to a camera.

btw, great idea to put it into an eyepatch. I've tried some of the HMD's before, but I never tried to see if you can still focus on just one screen with one eye. Do you have any trouble doing that? Also, can the second screen still be used or will it be rendered worthless after detaching it from the rest of the headset?

First off whats HMD's?

I'm unsure if these two screens inside, one for each eye or if the 'eye holes' just make it easier to focus - but if I do close one eye there is no difference in vision or viewing angle.

Because of the tight constraints of the gasmask I need the night vision screen needs to be mounted inside the mask, and pivot into place on some kind of rail system or whatever as Its not convenient to put my hand inside the mask to turn it on, or adjust it into position - this is needed as both eyes are already needed for the masks other eyeholes (1 normal, 1 infra-red filter)

However that I'll do, I just need the screen, battery & all the wires simplifying/modding - the camera requires no altering, the screen just needs to connect to it

Sorry, HMD is the abbreviation for Head Mounted Display. That's what you call all of these viewing devices. They're really not considered virtual reality since all they do is put a screen close to your eyes.

I didn't realize it was only one screen! Makes sense cost wise. The biggest hurdle I see is taking the mirror/lense positioning into account. The reason your eyes can focus on something that close and not get a headache is because the de-magnification makes it look further away from your eye. Even though its close.

Have you tried taking it apart at all to see if it's functional components could be shrunk into the space you want? I've never seen the insides.

Thanks for the abbreviation help.

Yup there's some kind of smoke and mirrors witchcraft involved as the screen does appear down a slight 'tunnel' but I haven't opened it up.

So lemme get this straight. All you want is half of the headset hooked up to a night vision camera? That sounds easy.

You could get a night vision camera with a view finder and hack that.
