Re: Genesis Building Thread
the gn twin has the best compatibility of the 3 nes/genesis clones i have. on the genesis side, i believe only 1 game i have didn't work (golden axe ii) due to the controller. here is my review of the gn twin. here is my review for the sg/fc dual action. my review for the gen-x was lost in the 2 week revert, but it falls between the other two. it is much better than the sg/fc dual action, but not quite up to the standard of the gn twin.SonyPortableizer wrote:I Want to build a Sega Genesis portable
Is this model a good one to use?

I have seen another that has built in games, but many reviews say it cant play genesis games...
hope that helps! there are even pics of the boards. here are the pics i had taken for the gen-x review.

Try it. The PSOne screen can run off that IIRC, and it is possible that the GN Twin can run on that too. I've found that the Genesis 2 can run on drastically lower than the default power brick's output (I got a Genesis 2 from a garage sale bundled with something like a 5 Volt power brick, and it actually worked from it).SonyPortableizer wrote:So Ill use the one ,in the link-the GN-Twin.
Also, Do you have a short how to on making the GN twin and ps1 screen run off 7.2 volts?
Ill be using a Zenith one
And I got 2 7.2 volt batteries so I prefer those
Thanks for quick responses
Re: Genesis Building Thread
Pardon me for butting in, but the GN Twin will work with Golden Axe II if the Select button is held down before the game loads. Select acts as the MODE button when the GN Twin, Gen-X and SG/FC Dual Action are in Genesis mode.lovablechevy wrote:the gn twin has the best compatibility of the 3 nes/genesis clones i have. on the genesis side, i believe only 1 game i have didn't work (golden axe ii) due to the controller.SonyPortableizer wrote:I Want to build a Sega Genesis portable

Re: Genesis Building Thread
umm... no. no it does not. i just tested it again. it is not compatible with golden axe ii no matter what button you press to begin with. there is no mode button on the gn twin or any other clone for that matter.Ace_1 wrote:Pardon me for butting in, but the GN Twin will work with Golden Axe II if the Select button is held down before the game loads. Strange.... Then why did After Burner Complete(this is a 32X game, btw) fire the F-14's machine guns when the Select button was pressed on my Gen-X? MODE and C are used to fire the machine guns in After Burner Complete, so Select can only be a MODE button. What other games are 3-button dependent other than Golden Axe II? I'll see if I can get them working properly on my Gen-X.

the controller is a weird hybrid between a genesis and nintendo controller. it maps buttons out weirdly for things. hence why in my review for all 3 of the nes/genesis clones, i stated how the buttons became mapped out for golden axe ii: right as select, left as x, down as y, and up as z.Ace_1 wrote:Strange.... I know. The controllers aren't even designed like original Genesis pads. They don't have the same signals at all. Take a look here: http://pinouts.ru/Game/genesiscontroller_pinout.shtml
The Gen-X controllers are not wired like that at all. They have VCC(+5V), G(Ground), those 2 which are connected the same way as a Genesis controller, DV(What is this?), DO(What is this?), OUTO(What is this?), and CLK(I don't see a clock line on the Genesis controller pinouts). What the hell? Anyways, I'd have to try with a 3-button dependent game. Which is the most common?
It seems strange, however, that my Gen-X registers Select as MODE while playing After Burner Complete, but in your case, it doesn't register anything while you turn on either of your clones. Maybe if you turn on the clones by holding Select, and if that doesn't work, reset the system, it'll work? Give it a run, see how it works.
Oh, by the way, I sent a PM concerning the crappy sound on the clones. The method I found doesn't work too well, so I'm currently trying to find a new one. It's all as a result of a bad mixing/amplifying circuit on the Genesis end. I will try with the LM324 chips taken off some of my dead Genesis 2s and see if that will improve the sound. Should also regulate volume problems, which are all related to the bad mixing circuit.
Say, in the Sonic games, which clone plays the jump sound the loudest, and which plays the ring sounds the quietest?
Also, would it be possible to split the Genesis and NES boards apart so that only the Genesis board is used? My Genesis 3 died on me, so I was thinking of swapping its board for the Gen-X's Genesis board(works with Virtua Racing and the 32X, which the Genesis 3 doesn't like).

i already did all of that kind of testing. i'm telling you, there is no "mode" button on these clones.Ace_1 wrote:It seems strange, however, that my Gen-X registers Select as MODE while playing After Burner Complete, but in your case, it doesn't register anything while you turn on either of your clones. and i no longer own any sonic games for the genesis.
can you provide picture and video proof of the 32x working on a clone...? i've had a friend working on it for quite some time now and they say it's impossible.Ace_1 wrote:Also, would it be possible to split the Genesis and NES boards apart so that only the Genesis board is used? I still don't get it. Anyways, we'll put that MODE button issue to rest.
32X compatibility on the Gen-X is actually crippled due to the following problems:
-No place to plug in the 32X patch cable(you get either the Genesis or 32X video layers), and using a Y-cable to join the 2 video outputs produces an image with rolling color bars
-Any sounds produced by the 32X's sound processors goes nowhere into the audio mixing circuit. It just stays at the cartridge slot and doesn't go anywhere else(will add that to my new mixing circuit).
Without modifying the Gen-X, the 32X works so-so. I can mix 32X audio in easily, but I never tried to get any Gen-X video out of a Genesis DIN plug(the 9-pin Mini-DIN from a dead Genesis 2). Shouldn't be too hard. Once that's done, I'll show the 32X working on the Gen-X, and the mods needed to get proper 32X compatibility.

Before portableizing, I should inform you that these clones have some horrid Genesis audio that scratches like crazy and has some volume problems(on that note, Lovablechevy, can you record the game that sounds the most horrid on the GN Twin and on an original Genesis(what model is your Genesis?)?), which are all due to a very crappy audio mixing/amplifying circuit. I will be getting some LM324 chips today, so I will begin work on a new sound circuit to eliminate the scratching and volume problems. Don't portableize your GN Twin until then, if you want it to sound right.
I know that the Gen-X and GN Twin aren't exactly built the same way, but with some high-res closeups of the GN Twin's Genesis board(top and bottom), I should be able to find the audio outputs from the TecToy-580G chip.
