Don't know if this is practical but how about using a TI step-down regulator to generate 1.5v (or just above) from the 7.5v batteries, then put this in series with the battery power, to get 1.5v + 7.5v = 9v; and take a line from the same batteries for 7.5v ?

Might be worth a try.

This won't work, because the 1.5V has to be referenced off of either 7.5V or ground; trying to series them together would cause a short somewhere along the way.

You could use a boost regulator, but this would be fairly inefficient if there is any significant current draw as you would need even more current from the battery to make up for the voltage difference. If you're looking to get good battery life, you would be better off using a higher voltage battery and stepping down the voltage to the levels you need. It's also possible that the FB2 doesn't actually need 9V, but I'm not familiar with it so maybe someone who is can chime in.

Hook them up in parallel. Positives from the screen and system to positive of battery, negative from the screen and system to the negative of the battery. I'm pretty sure the FB2 can run off 7.2v.

More or less agreed. Most probably there's a 7805 regulator inside. In the worst acse scenario you might have to replace it with a low voltage dropout regulator and it will work fine.

Might be worth a Google, maybe. Time is better wasted on researching than blowing stuff up.
