Game Boy mass storage idea...

Post by MM007 »

Well, I have an idea...the Game Boy(all Game Boys, in fact), have a link cable that can be used to transfer data at high speed. Instead of using expensive flash cards, why not take a USB thumbdrive and find a way to connect it to the Link Cable(I'm guessing the link Cable is a type or serial interface)?

That way, you might just need a single small flash cartridge to act as the driver and loader(maybe add an OS or even a GUI), and use the LINK CABLE to transfer data?

Is this possible? and if so, has anyone tried it?

The GBA link port is too slow to do that. And it would end up costing more than a flash cart.

Why bother? a simple flash cartrige would be cheaper and more portable. Besides, how would you play link-cable games or use the Printer?

Theres a device in Japan for Pokemon.

You plug it into the link port then into a mobile phone, then you can play pokemon trades/battles for as far as your phone will access..

Yeah, but that could never have been done in america.

In Japan, there are very limited choices for electronics, but here in the US of A, there are waaay too many companies to count.

So it would be hard to do that here since there are so many different brands, it would be too hard for Nintendo to make a deal with each of the companies.

Plus DS online will be here soon people, Metroid with a Headset. Yum.

It's true. Japanese phones are all compatible with each other, at least within a company. And since the phone manufacturers make phones for various providers (all 4), there is some compatibility even between providers.

MM007: As said before, the "high speed" of the link is quite questionable. In fact, it's really low speed. Honestly, your idea is good for loading demos, but most people want to play pirated games, and that's not gonna cut it. Besides, with the thumb drives, you're basically ending up with the same thing, except it's USB. What'd be really nice is if they had a CF or SmartMedia adapter that let you play games (they do have SM adapters here but they only play videos). Then you could just write your ROM to the card and throw it in the adapter.

The problem with flash cards though is this:

In most drives, the drive is expensive and the media is cheap.

In the case of those Flash Cards and similar devices, the drive is dirt cheap and the media can start at 3 times the cost of the drive, and go up to almost 10 times the cost of the drive, depending on capacity. Also, NONE of them are as good as a CD-ROM. I'm more likely to but a cheap 1.44 diskette based camera(a good number of pics at 1 Mega Pixel is something I can live with), or a Bluetooth-based camera.

As you can see, Flash cards may cost far too much a pop, especially at $5-$10 per Megabyte...

Also, does the DS have a link cable, and is IT fast enough?

MM007 where the hell did you get the figer of Flash cards costing $5.50 a meg?! 512 I've see for $70-85, thats less then less then $0.25 a meg. Also the card come in a veriaty of spees from 1x (150kb/s) to 45x (6750kb/s).

Now HK-47 we know the DS has wireless so its most likely has a transfer of atleast 1mb/s (if you have an actual figure please). Thats really pleant as I remember playing PSO over a 56k modem and having no lag (outside of loading time).

The SuperCard lets you play games stored on a CF card. You insert the CF card, it loads the game into RAM contained in the SuperCard itself, and the game runs from there.
