Windows Mobile Phone/PDA

Post by HotDog-Cart »

Hey guys. Have any of you ever used one of these before? Its like the older, slower, less powerful brother to the Sony Vaio UX50.

It runs Palm OS 5.2, has wireless, can browse internet and has a swivel screen and can turn into a tablet.

They go for like $150-$220 on ebay.

Heres what they look like:

Tablet Mode:

Heres the specs:

Now, here comes the questions.

These look handy. Very handy. I cant afford a powerful pocket pc. These are in my price range. ($100-$250)

Heres the thing.

1) Have any of you ever used one of these before? If so, how do they run? And did you like them?

2) Are these worth the price, or is there something better that I could get? (I do not want a EEEPC. I'm looking for something smaller than that, like a palm top with a keyboard like this. But if you know of any small laptops that are near my price range and are about the same size of a EEEPC, tell me.)

3) Can these run a NES Emulator or something?

4) Do you think it could support youtube? (Theres a flash player option in the menu, but I'm not sure what it is for.)

Thanks.

Not worth it IMO. My friend had one and let me borrow it for a while. He found a NES emulator but there was no physical controls, had to use the touch screen or something. Battery life is not very good at all(even with screen on lowest brightness setting). There are much better products out there.

OH! and unless it comes with the driver disk, you'll have some trouble finding those on the internet.

Eew, Palm. :P

Get a used Pocket PC off eBay. I see Dell x30s for around $100 (I have one; it serves its purpouse) and x51vs for around $200. (The x51v has a processor that's twice as fast, hardware 3D acceleration, and VGA out.)

EDIT:

The mid and high level ones do. (The lowest ones don't. I have a mid and use it for mobile Internet browsing all the time.)
And, I need a keyboard for it.... Therefor the dells wont really do the job...
Add-on keyboards. They make Bluetooth and IR ones. Dell even made one.
But the 3D accelerating catches my eye, but I need a keyboard for it. And I'm not talking about some bluetooth foldable keyboard. I need the keyboard to be able to hook onto the PDA, and be blackberry ish. (Like basically, is there a blackberry-type keyboard that can attach to these?)
Maybe there is. Also, remember where you're posting; if it hasn't been done, that means you're not trying hard enough. :P
I like the idea of 3D accelerating so I can play some 3D games like Counter Strike for Pocket PC, and Tony Hawk for Pocket PC. But, I need some type of attachable blackberry keyboard...
If you want games, make a came controller cradle. If you want an attachable keyboard, make one! This is benheck.com; we don't just settle for what has already been made! :P (Of course there may already be a detachable mini-keyboard; if not you could probably combine the encoder from a mini-keyboard with the keyboard add-on for the 360 controller or something.)

There are thumb keyboards (what you seem to be wanting) for the X50/X51 series. However, they are hard to find now.

Windows Mobile handhelds are far more PC like than Palms.

I used to have one, got rid of it. It is REALLY cool (One of the first handheld laptop form factor PDAs) but it is pretty underpowered for a lot of stuff. You would be better off with a different PDA.

Hmm, I seem to have luckily found some cheap PDAs on ebay.

I can get a Motorola Moto Q with Windows Mobile 5 for like $30-$50. (There not in the best condition though. Heavy scratches and such.)

Are these any good? Also, do I need to have a SIM card in the "phone/pda" to use the internet browser on it? (If so, forget this. I wont get it if I have to have a SIM card.)

Since it has no WiFi, yes you need a SIM card and cell plan to use it as a browsing device. :P

You don't want that thing anyway. WM smartphones generally don't have touch screens, and the Moto Q is no exception.

I need one with a keypad. Like one thats sidekick style would do, but I would need it to have wifi (so I'm not like, having to pay for internet)

I ran into, a few others that look promising.

A T-MOBILE DASH s620 HTC. Do these have wifi built in, for free internet?

Sprint6700. (These are like a sidekick. They have the type of keyboard I want. But do they have free wifi? I looked at one on ebay for $125 Not too sure as there are pictures of it with the logo of verizon and stuff. It may be cheap but, it runs WM 6.1 though. So it may be promising. I continued to look at the cheap pda/phone, and it says it has "Operation system:WINDOWS MOBILE 6.1 with 802.11b/g WLAN wireless network". Does that mean I dont need a SIM card to use the wifi?. It states it has Java support and IE. It runs WM 6.0 Professional and has Windows Live Messenger, and GPS. Shippings like $20-40, but they ship to canada and even included 1 year warranty.)

So basically what I'm looking for is:

A sidekick style phone/pda that has Windows Mobile and has wifi so I can use internet via a hotspot instead of paying for it via simcard.

I dont care if they are cheap rip offs of more expensive phones, or something. I just need it under the $250 price range.

Help me out guys. Post some links from ebay.com, so I can take a look at the phone. (The seller needs to ship to canada).

That HP is nice, but I am fancying the 6700. (Looks like this: http://www.geekz1.com/images/news/sprintPPC6700.jpg)

Has anyone ever used one of these before? It was Windows Mobile 5 on it. Is it possible to put Windows Mobile 6.1 on it?
