Laptop ram woes

Hey guys. I have heard from various people that not ALL laptop ram works in all laptops. Like only certain brands work in certain laptops. Is that true?

No not "certain brands" but yes not all laptop ram works in all laptops.

You need to match the pins and also the speed of the ram.

And then sometimes you will need it in banks of two, or matching banks of two.

It is really laptop dependent.

Also, sometimes latency is an issue. Example: The RAM in my Lifebook is CL2, and the (same speed/pins/etc) RAM from my friend's iBook didn't work, as it was CL3.

As long as you get the proper size and type of memory, there's no problem. (You don't put old PC133 RAM in a brand new laptop, for example. Also, some laptops can't see very large sticks; check the manufacturer's website or www.kahlon.com to see what kind of RAM your laptop needs.)

But if they said, for example, Corsair memory doesn't work in HP laptops, that's ridiculous.

Actually, it wasn't the CL3 that made it not work (the ram in my lifebook is CL3). It was high density ram, lifebooks and some other older laptops require low density ram. Don't ask me why, its just that way.

OK, thanks for the info. Doesn't make too much sense; his iBook was older than our Lifebooks. Meh, whatever.

probably a software thing. just like some SD readers can't read SDHC, but with reprogramming, can be made to accept it.

if ram is a problem you could always increase the virtual memory, thats a quick fix!
